The Yankees and Orioles playing bad baseball in Baltimore, a breakdown
What Happened
In a matchup between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles, the teams treat fans to some sloppy baseball in Baltimore. In the opening play, Yankees outfielder Cameron Maybin usually makes the catch, but the ball slips past him. This is followed by a hit-by-pitch in the third inning and another in the fifth, as both teams struggle to find the strike zone. In the third inning, New York second baseman DJ LeMahieu grounds a ball that the Orioles' infielder can't handle, leading to an errant throw to the foul line. The next play sees Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins diving for a fly ball, but he can't decide whether to catch it or trap it, resulting in a messy play. Later, with a runner on first and two outs, the Orioles' outfielder makes a catch, but Yankees baserunner Cameron Maybin bluffs the throw home, causing the Orioles' outfielder to make "one of the worst throws home you can throw." Maybin scores and LeMahieu advances from first to third on the play. Two innings later, the Orioles' outfielder has a chance to redeem himself, but his throw home is another "lollipop" that falls well short of the plate. With two outs in the inning, the Orioles' catcher appears to make a routine catch, but the ball inexplicably drops from his glove, keeping the inning alive. The defensive struggles continue, as the Orioles walk the next batter, which leads to Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez hitting a three-run home run in the ninth inning to give New York the lead. Even in the final play, Orioles infielder Gleyber Torres fields a tailor-made double play ball but throws it away, though the Yankees still manage to win the game. Throughout the matchup, the defensive miscues and sloppy plays from both teams are on full display, with the Orioles' outfielder's throws home being particularly egregious. The game serves as a reminder that even the best teams can have off-nights and struggle with the fundamentals of the game.
