Yankees celebrate an opening day walk-off, a breakdown

What Happened

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are locked in a fierce extra-innings battle on Opening Day. The game is tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 11th inning when Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson steps up to the plate against Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford. Donaldson, the Yankees' newest acquisition, has been closely watched by the Yankee faithful as they get to know the outspoken veteran. The teams are employing a defensive shift, with the shortstop and second baseman positioned well to the right side, leaving a big hole up the middle. Crawford delivers a 96 mph fastball that Donaldson takes for a strike, making it 1-1. On the next pitch, Crawford throws his signature cutter, but leaves it up in the zone. Donaldson unloads on the pitch, driving it up the middle past a diving Xander Bogaerts. The ball rolls to the wall as the runners advance, and Kike Hernandez scrambles to retrieve it. Donaldson races down the line, yelling "Let's f***ing go!" as he reaches second base with a game-winning RBI double. The Yankees pour out of the dugout in celebration, with second baseman Gleyber Torres and pitcher Nestor Cortes among the first to mob Donaldson. "Let's f***ing go, baby!" Donaldson shouts, his intensity on full display. The team forms a raucous scrum, tugging at each other's hair in the traditional Yankees walk-off celebration. DJ LeMahieu, the ever-steady leadoff man, gets his hair ruffled enthusiastically. Outfielder Aaron Hicks tries in vain to get in on the hair-pulling action before settling for a high-five. Catcher Jose Trevino and Torres engage in an awkward double high-five, not quite syncing up their hands. Hitter Isiah Kiner-Falefa sneaks in to steal a high-five intended for Donaldson, drawing laughter from the group. The celebration has a sense of relief, as the Yankees needed this win badly after an underwhelming Spring Training. As the players walk off the field arm-in-arm, ace Gerrit Cole watches from the dugout, a wide grin spreading across his face at his team's jubilation.
