Dylan Bundy doesn't cover home allowing two runs to score, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Baltimore Orioles hold a slim one-run lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dodgers outfielder AJ Pollock leads off the inning with a double, putting the tying run in scoring position. Cody Bellinger then pops up to the left fielder, but an errant throw to home plate allows the runner to score and knot the game at 1-1. Orioles starting pitcher Dylan Bundy is visibly frustrated, having trouble containing the Dodgers' offense. He walks Corey Seager to put runners on first and second with one out. A shallow pop-up to left field is caught, but Bundy fails to cover home plate, allowing another run to score and giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. The bases are now loaded for Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes. Bundy battles back to a two-strike count, but Barnes fouls off a pitch and then checks his swing on the next offering. The umpire rules that Barnes did not go around, much to Bundy's dismay. On the next pitch, Barnes swings and misses, but Bundy again fails to cover home, allowing all three runners to advance as the Dodgers extend their lead to 3-1. Bundy is clearly rattled, showing his frustration with his body language and occasional muttered expletives. The Orioles' defense has let him down multiple times this inning and the usually reliable Bundy has struggled to limit the damage. As the Dodgers pad their lead, the Orioles' dugout looks on in disbelief, knowing that this inning has slipped away from them. "I don't know if Bundy just forgot that runners can advance on a strikeout," says the television announcer. "But that's a lot of outs he's given up that didn't get recorded." The Orioles will need to regroup quickly if they hope to mount a comeback against the powerhouse Dodgers. For Bundy, this will be a tough learning experience as he tries to limit the mental mistakes that have plagued him in this frustrating inning.
