What Happened

In the seventh inning of a spring training game, veteran catcher Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals is behind the plate. The Cardinals intentionally walk the Astros' Martín Maldonado, putting a runner on first base. The Astros then send rookie José Siri to pinch-run at first. Siri, who has not yet made his MLB debut, hands his gold chain to the first base coach as he takes his lead off the bag. Molina quickly recognizes the young runner and decides to test him. "Alright, let's check on this rookie, make sure he doesn't get ahead of himself," Molina says. "Just because it's the seventh inning of a spring training game doesn't mean I'm not coming for him." Molina calls for an outside fastball from the Cardinals' pitcher. As the pitch is delivered, Molina eyes down Siri, saying "Yeah, alright, I'll come your way." The pitch misses its mark, allowing Siri to take a big lead. Molina almost picks him off, with Siri scrambling back to first base, shaking his head and saying "No, no, no, no, no, you don't do that to me." Undeterred, Siri decides to try and steal second base on the next pitch. Molina calls for an off-speed changeup and the pitcher delivers a perfect pitch. Molina rifles a throw down to second base, gunning down the stunned Siri. "Now you're going to look at me," Molina says to the rookie. "You're going to look at me. Okay, fine. Nice knowing you. See you later." The veteran catcher's combination of veteran savvy, pitch-calling and cannon-like arm have once again proven too much for a young, overaggressive baserunner. Molina, who is set to break the record for most Opening Day starts by a catcher this year, demonstrates why he is considered one of the best defensive catchers of his era.
