Mike Montgomery gets ejected after giving up a home run, a breakdown

What Happened

Michael Montgomery of the Kansas City Royals is on the mound against the Minnesota Twins. With the game tied in the late innings, Montgomery delivers a series of close pitches that the home plate umpire calls balls. Montgomery believes the umpire is making incorrect calls and expresses his frustration. After giving up a game-tying home run, the umpire ejects Montgomery from the game. As Montgomery works the count, he believes he has thrown several strikes that are called balls by the umpire. On a 3-1 pitch, Montgomery delivers a fastball that he feels should have been called a strike, but the umpire rules it a ball. Frustrated, Montgomery comes set and throws another fastball, which the batter hits over the wall for a game-tying home run. "Those curveballs sure felt nice, but he's made his [expletive] strike curveballs a [expletive] strike," Montgomery says. "I know it is. I'm mad, I'm so mad." Montgomery argues with the umpire, believing he is being targeted due to earlier calls in the game. "The ump was targeting me because some calls earlier in the game," Montgomery says. "He's not coming out because he doesn't want to start a fight. He wants to start a fight. That's what we're talking about. You're [expletive] up. That's why you better stop. That's why what you can do, you throw me out [expletive] terrible [expletive] you man." The umpire ejects Montgomery, who slams his glove down in frustration. As he walks off the field, Montgomery says the automated strike zone needs to be implemented, calling the umpire's calls "terrible" and "targeted." Security has to retrieve the ball that Montgomery threw towards the umpire, which will now serve as a souvenir for a fan. This is the first ejection of Montgomery's MLB career and he is clearly upset with the umpire's performance and his own eventual ejection.
