What Happened

In a close game between the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians, the action heats up in the bottom of the eighth inning with the score tied 1-1. Michael A. Taylor of the Royals bloop-singles to left field, and the throw from the Indians' outfielder is wide of first base, allowing the runner to advance to second. The next Royals batter laces a single to right field, putting runners on first and third. The Indians attempt a pickoff move, but it doesn't work out. The runner on third breaks for home, getting caught in a rundown. He tries to get the trailing runner, Nicky Lopez, to third base, but both end up occupying the same base. Umpire James Hoye initially calls both runners out, causing confusion among the players and managers. Royals catcher Salvador Perez tags the lead runner, Johnson, first, but that tag is meaningless since the base belongs to the lead runner. When Johnson's hand comes off the base, Perez then tags him again, but Hoye does not call him out, thinking the lead runner is still touching the base. Hoye then points to the trailing runner, Hernandez, and calls him out, further adding to the chaos. Indians manager Terry Francona and Royals manager Mike Matheny argue vehemently with Hoye, trying to understand the umpire's calls. Francona is eventually ejected for his animated protests, as the umpire struggles to explain the complex situation. Despite the messy eighth-inning play, the Royals manage to escape the jam. But in the bottom of the ninth, the Indians rally and deliver a walk-off home run, sending their players into a celebratory frenzy as they mob the batter at home plate.
