Umpire gets taken down in a three-way collision, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the 13th inning of a tense game between the Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers, a chaotic three-way collision unfolds near home plate. With the Brewers trailing by one and the leadoff batter walked, Rockies outfielder Yonathan Daza lays down a perfect bunt. Brewers catcher Omar Narváez fields the ball and makes an aggressive throw up the first base line, but there is no one covering the bag. As Narváez's throw sails past the first baseman, the second baseman, Kolten Wong, quickly pivots to chase down the errant throw. However, in his haste, Wong collides directly with the home plate umpire, knocking the umpire to the ground. The force of the collision also brings down Daza, the Rockies baserunner. "It's just a [mess] of funny," observes the commentator. Daza wisely avoids running over the umpire, showing good awareness to not potentially injure the official. The umpire, however, is not so fortunate, as his elbow hits the ground hard and begins bleeding profusely. "The umpire does get hurt, 'cause his elbow hit the ground and he's bleeding all over," the commentator notes. "He's really old and not a young athlete and his skin bleeds a lot, so they're gonna have to patch that up." Despite the chaotic scene, the umpire remains professional, indicating "I'm good, yeah no problem" after the collision. The commentator reassures, "He's a professional, all good, no problems here. Let's go on with the game." This bizarre three-way collision comes in the 13th inning of a close contest, with the Brewers fighting to stay in playoff position. The stakes are high, the players are fatigued and in the chaos, the home plate umpire becomes an unwitting participant. Though injured, the umpire demonstrates his experience and composure, allowing the game to continue after a brief interruption.
