What Happened

In the top of the fifth inning of a scoreless game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha of the Rays faces off against Clint Frazier of the Yankees. The game is tied 0-0 and the stakes are high as the two American League East rivals battle it out. Wacha delivers a sweeping breaking ball to Frazier, who lays off the pitch as the home plate umpire calls it a ball. Wacha comes back with another sharp breaking pitch on the outside corner and the umpire rules it a strike. Frazier takes a frustrated swing at the next offering, which narrowly misses the strike zone. As Wacha continues to work the outside part of the plate, Frazier becomes visibly frustrated. On a 3-2 pitch, Wacha throws inside and the umpire calls it a strike, ringing up Frazier. Frazier turns to the umpire and says something and the umpire immediately ejects him from the game. Yankees manager Aaron Boone rushes out to argue, but he appears more upset with Frazier than the umpire. "Boone just looks defeated by the whole thing," the commentator notes, as Frazier walks off the field. The Yankees are already short-handed, with infielder Gio Urshela out due to COVID-19 protocols. "Clint definitely didn't deserve to get tossed," the commentator says, noting that the pitch called strike three was a borderline call, with Pitch Tracking systems showing it as a strike. "The ump's in the wrong there," he adds, criticizing the umpire's quick trigger in ejecting Frazier. As Frazier returns to the dugout, he explains the situation to a teammate, saying, "I said this and he said 'gone,' and that was it." The commentator notes that Frazier's reaction did not seem to warrant such a swift ejection, leaving the Yankees short-handed in a tight division rivalry game.
