Ump says Yelich attempted to go to second and calls him out, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Milwaukee Brewers trail the opposing team by two runs. Christian Yelich, the Brewers' star outfielder, steps up to the plate with the hopes of getting his team back in the game. Sensing an opportunity, Yelich decides to lay down a bunt, taking advantage of the defensive shift against him. As the pitcher, Caleb Fields, fields the ball and fires it to first base, the throw bounces wide. Yelich takes a step towards second base, but then quickly decides to return to first. The first base coach signals for Yelich to go, but the umpire has already made the call – Yelich is out. Yelich and the Brewers' coaching staff are visibly upset by the umpire's decision. Christian Yelich, the 2018 National League MVP, turns to the umpire and exclaims, "Are you f***ing kidding me? No, no, can't be doing that s***!" Quintin Berry, the Brewers' first base coach, tries to hold Yelich back, but the frustration is evident on both their faces. The umpire explains his reasoning, stating that Yelich needed to "attempt to go to second" for the play to be ruled safe. However, the Brewers' dugout disagrees, with one of the coaches saying, "That's f***ing terrible," and walking off in disgust. The rule in question is open to interpretation, and the umpire's decision has clearly left the Brewers' players and coaches feeling wronged. Christian Yelich, known for his calm and composed demeanor, is visibly upset, showcasing the high stakes and intensity of the moment. As the inning continues, the Brewers will need to regroup and find a way to overcome the umpire's controversial call if they hope to mount a comeback and potentially secure a victory in this tight game.
