What Happened
In a crucial top of the eighth inning with the game on the line, Henry Davis of the Pittsburgh Pirates comes to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. The Pirates trail the San Diego Padres by one run in this tight matchup. The tension builds as Davis works the count full against Padres pitcher Nabil Crismatt. On the full-count offering, Davis takes a pitch that appears to be well below the strike zone, but the home plate umpire, Edwin Jimenez, calls it strike three to end the threat. Incensed, Davis immediately protests the call, throwing down his shin guard and helmet in frustration. Padres manager Bob Melvin also argues the call, believing it was clearly a ball that should have walked in the tying run. Replays show the pitch was indeed low and out of the strike zone, supporting the Pirates' outrage. The young umpire Jimenez, in his first year in the big leagues, stands his ground, drawing the ire of the Pittsburgh dugout. In the bottom of the eighth, veteran Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen takes his spot at the top step of the dugout, never taking his eyes off Jimenez and staring him down intensely. McCutchen, visibly upset about the missed call, refuses to turn his head and watch the action on the field, keeping his laser focus on the umpire. The very next batter, Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr., also puts the ball in play, but McCutchen again doesn't even flinch, continuing his unblinking stare down of Jimenez. Reliever Wil Crowe then gets a quick two-out inning, with McCutchen maintaining his stone-faced glare at the umpire the entire time. As the teams switch sides heading to the bottom of the ninth, McCutchen finally breaks his stare, but remains at the top step, unwilling to leave his post. The Pirates are unable to mount a comeback in the final frame, falling by the one-run margin. A clearly irate McCutchen stands his ground, ultimately confronting the umpire as he exits the field, voicing his strong disagreement with the critical missed call earlier in the game.
