The Senators walk it off in the 12th to win the 1924 world series, a breakdown
What Happened
The 1924 World Series between the Washington Senators and the New York Giants is locked in a tense Game 7 at Griffith Stadium. It's the bottom of the 12th inning and the score is tied. Washington's legendary pitcher Walter Johnson takes the mound, hoping to keep the Giants at bay and set the stage for a potential walk-off win. The first batter steps up to the plate and Johnson unleashes a whirling delivery, challenging the hitter with his overpowering fastball. The Giants' batter puts the ball in play and the Senators' fielders spring into action, gunning down the runner at third base. The next Giants hitter steps in and the tension builds as Johnson fires another pitch. The batter takes a peculiar stance, holding his bat low and seemingly unfazed by the velocity. But Johnson's experience proves too much and the hitter pops out harmlessly. With two outs in the 12th, the Senators' offense gets its chance. The leadoff batter crushes a towering home run, sending the partisan crowd into a frenzy. President Calvin Coolidge, in attendance, removes his hat to applaud the heroic moment. The game remains deadlocked as the Giants come to bat in the bottom of the 12th. Johnson coaxes a routine pop-up and the Senators' third baseman secures the out, flashing a smile as he hands the ball to the umpire. In the bottom of the 12th, the Senators' offense sparks to life. A triple off the wall puts the winning run in scoring position and the crowd erupts in anticipation. The next batter steps up and the Senators' faithful hold their breath. The pitcher winds up and delivers and the batter sends a sharp ground ball towards the right side. The Senators' first baseman fields it cleanly and unleashes a throw to the plate, where the catcher awaits the runner. The play is close, but the runner slides in safely, sparking a wild celebration on the Senators' bench and among the ecstatic fans. The Senators have won the 1924 World Series in dramatic fashion, with a walk-off victory in the 12th inning of the decisive Game 7. The players and coaches embrace, while the overjoyed crowd surges onto the field, reveling in their team's championship triumph.
