Pedro Martínez throws Don Zimmer to the ground, a breakdown
What Happened
In the fourth inning of Game 3 of the 2003 American League Championship Series, tensions boil over between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The series is tied at two games apiece and the stakes are high as these bitter rivals battle for a spot in the World Series. The Yankees' Jorge Posada leads off the inning with a walk against Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martínez. The two players have a history of bad blood and it's clear the animosity is still present. Martínez then surrenders a double to Nick Johnson, allowing Posada to score and putting the Yankees on the board. Hideki Matsui follows with an RBI single and the Yankees have taken a 3-0 lead. Martínez is visibly frustrated and when Karim García steps to the plate, the veteran right-hander appears to throw at him intentionally. García takes exception and the two players engage in a heated stare-down at the mound. Martínez is able to induce a double-play groundout from García, but the tension continues to escalate. When García slides hard into second base, Yankees catcher Jorge Posada takes offense and confronts Martínez. "You're next," Posada is said to have told the Red Sox ace, according to Martínez's later recollection. At this point, the situation boils over and chaos ensues. Veteran Red Sox slugger David Ortiz tries to hold back Posada, but the two teams spill onto the field as a full-fledged brawl breaks out. In the midst of the melee, the 72-year-old Don Zimmer, a Yankees coach, rushes towards Martínez and is promptly thrown to the ground by the dominant right-hander. "What happened? Pedro hated him," Zimmer later says, recounting the incident. Martínez explains that Zimmer had also made comments about his mother, prompting the aggressive response. The umpires ultimately decide not to eject any players and the game resumes. Tensions remain high and later in the game, another altercation breaks out in the bullpen, but again, no one is ejected. The dramatic events of this game would become a defining moment in the storied Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, with Martínez's handling of the 72-year-old Zimmer drawing widespread criticism and debate. The intensity and animosity between these two teams is on full display, setting the stage for an epic clash with a World Series berth on the line.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentthe 2003 ALCS were tied at two Posada
gets walked him and Pedro never liked
each other and then Nick Johnson
invented the little thumb ring that
batters where he rips a double but
monster jabs are really just a single
and then Matsui knocks in another run so
now Pedro's getting knocked around a
little bit we're only in the fourth
inning there's no outs three runs have
been scored Kareem Garcia is gonna come
to the plate who has an RBI against him
already in this game he's not happy guys
aren't scared of him in the box
they at first base open did he throw at
Kareem on purpose I think he did but
maybe not Pedro did to say that 90% of
the batters he hit he hit on purpose his
own quote so Kareem Garcia is like dude
why are you throwing at me what the [ __ ]
I just got traded over here I mean I'm
not part of this leaving me for all my
[ __ ] head and Pedro and him they're
gonna get a little staring contest here
just a great staring contest good good
camera work by foxier just really in
there and um says hey cream you can go
first though and he said oh ok great
then Pedro rose the DoublePlay ball
pretty nice and we're gonna see on a bad
Fox camera a Bigfoot cam that Kareem
goes hard into second base takes out his
legs and starts John again he's mad he
saw a ball come out his face so he's
probably still pretty heated heated up
Joe West shout-out now now Pedro is
yelling at him you can see Posada come
out and here's where things start to get
really dicey and tricky and really
escalated cuz when Pedro and Posada he
points at his head right there then
points out his head again now back in
the day Pedro said he was saying think
think use your head I'm not gonna throw
at Kareem and then a couple years ago
Pedro changed his story to say that
Posada said something about his mom and
he was saying I'll remember that I'll
remember that clearly all the Yankees
and the announcers and anyone watching
thought he said you're next Posada
Thompson I might get that son of a [ __ ]
and now Posada says you gonna throw out
my head okay bring it throw out my head
sure bring it come on let's go he's
don't tempt me with a good time I might
do it later on Manny ramírez steps in
probably scared he's gonna get hit ball
that's high in the zone not really that
far inside very sensitive to it can you
tell him a Yankee fan and starts yelling
I think he went up there expecting to
get hit and expecting a fight and then
he was like that's my chance scared of
everyone or teased us to hold him back
everyone goes to the middle to fight
Don Zimmer beelines it for Pedro
Martinez and you can see Pedro here go
what
and in Pedro story in a couple years ago
he said that Don Zimmer also said
something bad about his mother so he had
to do this to defend himself so in the
retelling everyone's just talking about
Pedro's mom a lot I guess and
holy smokes
that is a stopper so you can see I mean
Don Zimmer 72 years old he's running at
him like he's not taking it easy he's
charging the left hand is swiping Pedro
gets both hands around the head and just
tosses him I mean check out the
follow-through his whole torso moves
with him he liked finish strong through
that old man to the ground you can see
even Ortiz is like way whoa whoa whoa
what the cop is quick to help out zim
zim quick to get back to his knees
peddling and oh [ __ ] okay maybe I
shouldn't have done that they're like we
got to get you in hiding we got to get
you out of here and the whole fight what
happened
Pettit what had happened everyone was
fighting and then they were like hey uh
you know Pedro threw Zimmer so everyone
just like oh [ __ ] okay nevermind we got
well let's just cut the [ __ ] now and see
if Zim's okay Zim pops up you're gonna
see Roger Clemens walking with them
Roger Cummings like what happened who
did this and Zimmer says Pedro hater
says yep
I threw him we're down on the ground
just like that just side toss them Zim
gets stitched up the umpires get
together they say what should we do and
then they say well let's just not eject
anyone and keep playing baseball sounds
good to me
what they did later on there was a fight
in the bullpen no ejections then either
