Mookie Betts ends 13-pitch at-bat with a Grand Slam, a breakdown
What Happened
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts steps to the plate against Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish. The Red Sox trail by one run in this close game and the crowd at Fenway Park is electric, sensing the potential for a dramatic comeback. Betts digs in at the plate, fully focused as Darvish delivers the first pitch. It's a fastball that Betts swings at and fouls off. The two-time All-Star then takes the next two pitches, working the count to 1-1. Darvish tries to paint the corner with his next offering, but Betts is able to foul it off again, prolonging the at-bat. The next several pitches see Betts and Darvish engaged in a classic duel, with the pitcher trying to keep the slugger off-balance by mixing his fastball and offspeed pitches. Betts fouls off pitch after pitch, wearing down Darvish and delighting the hometown fans, who chant "Let's go, Mookie!" with each passing moment. Finally, on the 13th pitch of the at-bat, Darvish leaves a fastball up in the zone and Mookie Betts does not miss. He unleashes a towering drive deep to right field and as the ball sails over the wall, the Fenway faithful erupt in a frenzy. "Grand slam!" the announcer exclaims, as Betts trots around the bases, pumping his fist in celebration. "That's why they call him Mookie," says the color commentator, praising Betts' ability to grind out a tough at-bat and deliver in a high-pressure situation. The young Red Sox star rounds third base and is mobbed by his teammates, who pour out of the dugout to congratulate him on the game-winning blast. As the dust settles, the scoreboard shows the final score: Red Sox 4, Cubs 3. Mookie Betts' heroics have lifted his team to a dramatic comeback victory, delighting the home crowd and further cementing his status as one of the game's premier players.

grand-slam on the request lists and i
thought well let's see how we got to
this place and it's actually a very
tragic tale so HAP has won out but he
gives up a base hit no worries ground
ball DoublePlay ball in order to outs
out of the inning
okay safe at first wasn't quick enough
oh no the neighborhood play doesn't
exist anymore with replay so he is safe
at second and safe at first not the best
turn by Travis because instead of
getting the two outs he got the no outs
because his foot [ __ ] up there and
then his arm [ __ ] up and not throwing
it fast enough speed on the base paths
but anyway don't worry here comes
another tapper here's the second out ok
nevermind it's too slow
all around more runners on base all
right another one in play a little
infield squib actually a nice play there
a nice play a run does score but they
get the out now we walk the bases loaded
again what a bummer
two outs should have been made already 3
maybe at least 2 so now Mookie's up with
the bases loaded Happ goes fast well
that's kind of a meaty pitch Happ is a
fastball pitcher if you don't know and
he likes to go up and down up down up
down that pitch was right down the
middle missed his spot lubes up give me
that Sun Tan Lotion rosin mix let me get
going now that one's a little high but
don't worry here comes the fourth out of
the inning smokes got it I mean it would
have been a really nice play but it's in
his glove that's four outs Happ could
have should have had smoked knows it
goes crooked neck on I'm thinking about
it understands now Happ starts trying to
hit the bottom of the zone and then he's
gonna go back up to the top of the zone
and now that he's got him high he'll
drop the off-speed pitch nice pitch but
Mookie just spoils it throws another one
Mookie spoils it again so now he goes
back to the high fastball just trying to
change the eyeline up and down up and
down up and down down no key spoils it
again so now it's not bat it's a battle
and all of Fenway gets on their feet
because they're the biggest Mookie fans
Mookie forever can't ever see him in
another uniform and they're just
cheering their butts off HAP's
Spike's won no damage but now that
counts full and Mookie knows he's not
giving me a ball with the bases loaded
I'm a swing out of my shoes so what's he
do he goes and gets one not even that
bad of a pitch by hat below the zone
Mookie hammers it for a Grand Slam of
this ooh over there that kids screaming
he probably cried when they traded him
and that's sad and everyone opens their
mouth we're just talking it was a negate
fest the most open mouths in one photo
just jaws dropped uh open mouths galore
that's [ __ ] God and then he kind of
almost trips right here which would have
been real embarrassing but he saves
himself into another let's [ __ ] go
[Music]
oh so excited show me the opposite of
that emotion please Oh
