Michigan beats Florida State in the college world series, a breakdown
What Happened
In the opening game of the College World Series, the Michigan Wolverines take on the Florida State Seminoles. The first batter of the game for Michigan is Jessie Franklin, who steps to the plate and crushes a 94 mph fastball deep to right field for a solo home run, giving the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the fifth inning, Jordan Nwogu comes to the plate for Michigan. He slaps a curveball past the Florida State second baseman and hustles down the line, sliding safely into third base. Jessie Franklin follows with another single, putting runners on the corners for Jimmy Kerr. Kerr laces a base hit to score Nwogu and Michigan extends their lead to 2-0. On the mound for the Wolverines is Tommy Henry, a top MLB draft prospect. Henry is dominant, throwing a complete game shutout and allowing just two hits. He works efficiently, retiring the Seminoles' hitters and preserving Michigan's 2-0 advantage. In the field, Jimmy Kerr makes a nice play, fielding a comebacker and firing to first for the out. Henry gets a little frustrated after the play, feeling he should have caught the ball himself, but he refocuses and records the final three outs to secure the victory for Michigan. "It's that deep breath," Henry says after the game. "Three more outs and we win this thing. We beat Florida State." The Wolverines' pitching and timely hitting prove to be the difference, as they take down the Seminoles by a final score of 2-0 in the opening game of the College World Series. Michigan's strong all-around performance, led by the dominant outing from Tommy Henry, gives them an early advantage in this best-of-three series.
