Max Muncy and Dave Roberts Both Get Ejected, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the third inning of a tight game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Seattle Mariners, Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy steps up to the plate. Muncy has already hit a solo home run earlier in the game, but also struck out looking. Now with the Mariners holding a narrow lead, Muncy is looking to make an impact. Muncy takes the first two pitches for balls, appearing a bit anxious at the plate. Catcher Cal Raleigh tries to calm him down, urging Muncy to take a deep breath. On the next pitch, plate umpire Chris Segal calls a strike that Muncy vehemently disagrees with. Muncy leans back and appears to say a few choice words to Segal, who promptly ejects him from the game. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts immediately rushes out to defend his player, getting in Segal's face and gesturing emphatically. Roberts is also ejected after a heated exchange with the umpire. The fans at T-Mobile Park in Seattle loudly boo the ejections, sensing the umpire may have overreacted. Replays show the pitch to Muncy was indeed close and it's clear Segal called it consistently with a similar borderline pitch earlier in Muncy's at-bat. However, Muncy felt the calls were unfair, leading to his frustrated outburst. Roberts, as the manager, felt compelled to stand up for his player and was ejected for his actions. As Muncy walks back to the dugout, he continues muttering to himself, clearly still fuming over the quick hook. The umpire makes the decision to eject Muncy as well, ending his day early. The Dodgers will have to finish the game without their All-Star first baseman, a significant blow as they try to overcome the Mariners' narrow lead. This heated exchange between the Dodgers and the umpiring crew is an unfortunate disruption in an otherwise close and competitive game between two playoff-contending teams. The emotions boiled over, leading to the ejections of both Muncy and Roberts, leaving the Dodgers shorthanded as they look to rally back against the Mariners.
