What Happened

In the bottom of the first inning, San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado steps up to the plate against Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zach Gallen. The count is 2-0 as Gallen delivers another fastball that is well outside the strike zone. Machado does not leave the batter's box, remaining ready to hit as the pitch clock ticks down. With just five seconds remaining, Gallen throws another fastball that misses the mark, putting the count at 3-1. Machado appears agitated, knowing he is in a favorable hitter's count. The next pitch from Gallen is a curveball that catches the strike zone, evening the count at 3-2. Machado takes a big swing but misses the pitch. As the umpire calls strike three, Machado does not immediately leave the box, as he believes he is still entitled to call a timeout during the pitch clock's final seconds. However, the umpire Ron Kulpa rules that Machado was not set and ready to hit by the 8-second mark on the pitch clock, so he cannot call timeout at this point. Machado argues vehemently, telling Kulpa "I had it, I called time!" Kulpa explains that the rules state the batter must be ready before the 8-second mark, which Machado clearly was not. Machado continues to dispute the call, telling Kulpa "You're a fucking douchebag, that's why I'm pissed!" Enraged by the language, Kulpa immediately ejects Machado from the game. Padres manager Bob Melvin comes out to argue the ejection, to no avail. Melvin tells Kulpa, "He had it, you called him a fucking douchebag - of course you had to eject him!" But Kulpa stands by his decision, stating that Machado's profane language left him no choice but to eject the star player. This heated exchange showcases Machado's frustration with the new pitch clock rule and his belief that he properly called timeout, despite the umpire's ruling. The ejection will force Machado to sit out the remainder of this NL West rivalry matchup between the Padres and Dodgers.
