Kolton Wong goes for the little league home run and comes up short, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Pittsburgh Pirates lead the Milwaukee Brewers by one run. Kolton Wong of the Brewers steps to the plate against Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove. On the first pitch, Wong rips a line drive down the left field line and it looks like he might leg out a triple. Wong hustles out of the box, rounding first base and heading for second. The left fielder fields the ball and fires it to the cutoff man, but Wong is sliding in safely at second base with a stand-up double. The umpire initially signals that the ball was foul, but after a quick conference, the call is reversed and Wong's double stands. Brewers manager Craig Counsell comes out to argue the call, but the umpires hold firm on the ruling. Musgrove then works the count to 0-2 on Wong, trying to double him up, but Wong fouls off a couple of pitches to stay alive. On the next offering, Wong makes solid contact again, sending the ball rocketing down the left field line. This time, the left fielder has trouble fielding the carom off the wall and Wong immediately takes off for third base, hoping to complete the little league home run. However, Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes quickly gathers the ball and makes an accurate throw to third, just nipping Wong for the out. "Oh man, I should have just stayed at third," a visibly tired Wong says after the play. "I'm really tired now." The Pirates fans in attendance erupt in cheers, relieved to see their team escape the jam. Brewers fans, on the other hand, groan in disappointment, hoping Wong could have pulled off the rare feat. Despite the out, Wong has now recorded a hit in every game so far this season, making him a valuable fantasy option, as notes. With the tying run still on second base, the Brewers will have another chance to even the score in the late innings. The rivalry between these two NL Central foes continues to provide exciting baseball for the fans.
