José Ramirez tags out Enmanuel Valdez while he was injured calling timeout, a breakdown
What Happened
In a dramatic ninth-inning play, Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Enmanuel Valdez slides safely into third base, but is then tagged out by Cleveland Guardians third baseman José Ramírez while attempting to call timeout. The play unfolds with Valdez leading off the inning and hitting a double into the gap. As he rounds the bases, his helmet comes off, but he makes it to third base safely and calls for a timeout. However, before the umpire can grant the timeout, Ramírez tags Valdez out and the umpire confirms the out call. The replay shows that Valdez was attempting to call timeout as he slid into third, but Ramírez quickly tagged him out. Valdez's left shoulder appears to be injured, limiting his mobility and he is seen yelling "Time" while lifting his hand off the base. As the umpire is about to call timeout, he instead calls Valdez out, stating that his hand came off the base. The Guardians bench celebrates the play, with Ramírez apologizing to the injured Valdez. The incident sparks confusion and frustration, with the Pirates bench arguing that Valdez had clearly called timeout before being tagged out. The broadcast shows a young fan in the stands, visibly upset by the controversial call. The announcer expresses his own displeasure, stating that the play "stinks" and that the rules should be reviewed to better accommodate injured players attempting to call timeout. Despite the Pirates' challenge, the out call is confirmed and Valdez is forced to exit the game due to his injury. The sequence highlights the complexities of the rules surrounding timeout calls and the potential need for more nuanced officiating in such situations, particularly when a player is visibly injured. The incident leaves both teams and fans grappling with the fairness and implications of the decisive play.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentThis one's about a week old, but I
couldn't not do it. I didn't get to it
in time and I was going to not do it and
I was like, "No, I got to do it because
I want to talk about it. I want to hear
your thoughts. I want to hear your
opinions because I think this sucks."
Breakdown's brought to you by
DraftKings. We got Valdez up for
Pittsburgh. They're trying to put
together a ninth inning rally. He's the
leadoff guy. He shoots one to the gap.
He hits first base. He's going to
second. Helmet comes off. He hits second
base. He's going to third. He's digging.
He gets to third. He slides in. Gets
back in time. Safe. Safe. Calls time.
Gets tagged. Calling time. Um says he's
out. Um steps on his hand. Goes over
him. Calls him out. Stepped on his hand.
He's hurt. Unbelievable. Here's the
replay just right there. You know, not
fully the ump's fault because he's
moving his hand and the umpire is moving
his foot and they just land in the same
spot. Why did he have to walk over his
his body to punch him out though? That
confused me. Uh the bench is like what?
They said, "You called time.
What are we doing? He's hurt." Before I
could call time, he pulled his hand from
the base and then he got tagged out and
he's like, "What? What happening?" So,
he's lying there hurt. I This is so
stupid to me and should be something
that we fix along the way. I don't know
how. Uh, he walks off. Now, bench coach,
your guy on the bench is going to
explain to to Sheldy and say, "No, he
was safe." Then he flicks his hand up
off the base to call
time. So then Jose tags him and that's
what happened. They do say, "We'd like a
review." Challenging the out third base.
We got a real cool shot of the slide.
Gets the hand in. And then this is a
close race. He comes off a little bit. J
Rams right there.
Super close race, but he gets it back
down. And then his left shoulder is
hurt, so he can't move it. You can see
his face is in pain and he yells, "Time
right here." He goes,
"Time." But he's in pain. And it and it
doesn't work. So then he lifts his hand
up to call time because his left
shoulder isn't really mobile right now.
And while he's doing that gets tagged
out. That's what they're reviewing. Now,
what's interesting is the umpire is
about to call time. He's like, "Time is
Oh, no. He's out." Yeah. His hand came
off. Yep. Out. Over your dead body. I'm
going to punch you out. Bam. As JRAM
celebrates and he's like, "Oh, sorry,
man. Sorry, but you're out,
dude." Just
tough. Stinks.
Guess just hang on to the base a little
more. I don't know. I don't like it. I
don't think it's in the spirit of
anything. I don't think it's in the
spirit of anything.
Confirmed. The runner is out.
crazy. Yeah, this fan can't. No
way. That's terrible. This mom's going
to explain it to the kid. He's out. Why?
What just happened? That's the cutest
little Why? What just happened? Why?
What just happened? Huh? And big eyes.
And she says, "The runner's out." Cute
ending to a bad a bad situation. I don't
think that should be anything. I don't
think that should be I think I think we
should be able to go to review and be
like, "Okay, he called time because but
umpires kind of have to be literalist,
so I get it. But that stinks and I don't
like it and I think they should fix it
somehow. Guy was hurt. Guy's trying to
call time. What do you guys think? Let
me know. And thank you to DraftKings for
