Josh Reddick and Carlos Correa Perfect Relay Throw to Get Semien, A Breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Oakland Athletics have just hit a home run to bring the score to within two runs of the Houston Astros. Marcus Semien of the Athletics slaps a ball down into the corner and attempts to advance to third base. Outfielder Josh Reddick of the Astros fields the ball and unleashes an incredible throw to shortstop Carlos Correa, who completes the perfect relay throw to get Semien out at third. As Semien rounds second base, it appears there is no way the Astros will be able to throw him out. However, Reddick's throw is shockingly accurate and Correa is able to collect it and deliver a bullet to third baseman Alex Bregman, who applies the tag just in time. Correa turns to Reddick and exclaims, "Yeah, yeah, it was easy, man!" Reddick is visibly surprised at the successful play, acknowledging, "Jesus Christ, what was that?" Reddick's throw is so well-executed because he knows the Oracle Park outfield so well, anticipating how the ball will ricochet off the walls. He is able to unleash the throw without even looking, relying on his arm strength to get the ball to the cutoff man. Correa has to reach for the high throw, but he maintains his composure and fires a strike to Bregman, who expertly times the tag to get Semien out at third. The umpire makes the close call in favor of the Astros, with the replay showing it was indeed an incredibly close play. Semien's slide into third base appears somewhat pedestrian and his third-base coach likely should have advised him to slide earlier or try a different approach. Nonetheless, the Astros' defense executes the relay throw to perfection, with Reddick and Correa combining for a spectacular, game-saving play.
