Joey Votto Turns a Game Saving Triple Play, a breakdown
What Happened
In the eighth inning of a close game between the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians, the Indians have a one-run lead and runners on first and third base with no outs. Cleveland outfielder Eddie Rosario is on third base and first baseman Franmil Reyes is on first after stealing the base. Reds veteran first baseman Joey Votto makes a spectacular play to escape the jam. Votto catches a line drive off the bat of Indians first baseman Josh Naylor and quickly tags out Reyes for the first out. Votto then turns and throws to third base, where Rosario had strayed too far off the bag. The throw beats Rosario to the base and the umpire rules he did not tag up properly, resulting in the rare unassisted triple play. "Votto's all fired up, pumped up," the announcer exclaims. "Triple play, out of the inning. Saves the inning." Votto celebrates with high-fives in the Reds dugout, as the Indians' Rosario and Reyes are left stunned by the turn of events. The announcer notes that unassisted triple plays are exceedingly rare, with only 15 recorded in Major League Baseball history from 1909 to 2009. "Votto could have just walked the ball all the way to third base and put himself in the record books, but he's a team player," the announcer says. The Reds go on to win the game after Votto's game-saving defensive heroics. The announcer concludes by giving some unofficial betting advice, encouraging listeners to use the DraftKings app and "" to wager on the Reds' high-scoring offense.
