J. T. Realmuto is not a fan of Jared Hughes sprinting to the mound, which is so dumb, a breakdown
What Happened
The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets are locked in a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 8th inning when the Mets load the bases. Reliever Jared Hughes is called in from the bullpen to try to limit the damage for the Phillies. As Hughes quickly sprints to the mound, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto is exasperated, shaking his head and muttering, "Jesus Christ and this [expletive] again." Realmuto clearly does not approve of Hughes' dramatic entrance, believing the pitcher is not in proper physical condition to be sprinting to the mound in that manner. "Dammit, now he's like thinks it's a joke. Ha ha ha, see how fast that is around it," Realmuto says, frustrated by Hughes' antics. Once on the mound, Hughes is visibly winded, struggling to catch his breath. He has to step off the rubber and make a fake pickoff throw just to compose himself. "What did? What an idiot," Realmuto says in disbelief. "Honestly, this kind of makes me mad. You're a professional athlete, not a 7-year-old coming out of the bullpen excited to get snacks after the game." With Hughes still struggling to catch his breath, Todd Frazier steps to the plate for the Mets. On a 1-0 pitch, Frazier ropes a three-run home run, blowing the game open for New York. As Frazier rounds the bases, Hughes slowly walks off the mound, his poor outing clearly taking a toll. "It's not funny anymore, I get it now," Hughes says dejectedly as he heads to the dugout. The Phillies are forced to bring in another reliever, who jogs to the mound at a normal pace. "What an atrocious outing and kind of just bad for the Hughes brand," Realmuto laments. "You kind of just look like such a dumb, dumb dummy." The Mets go on to win the game 4-1, extending their lead in the NL East over the struggling Phillies. It's a frustrating night for Philadelphia, capped off by the embarrassing display from the normally reliable Hughes.
