What Happened

Aaron Judge steps up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the New York Yankees trailing the Boston Red Sox by a run. The crowd at Yankee Stadium is on the edge of their seats, sensing the potential for a dramatic finish. Judge digs in, the tension palpable as he looks to spark a late-inning comeback for the hometown team. The right-handed slugger takes the first pitch for a ball, then swings hard at the next offering, sending a towering fly ball deep to left field. Boston left fielder Alex Verdugo gives chase, his eyes locked on the ball as it carries towards the wall. Verdugo reaches the warning track and leaps, his glove extended, but the ball sails just over the fence for a game-tying solo home run. The crowd erupts in cheers as Judge rounds the bases, pumping his fist in celebration. "That's why he's the MVP!" exclaims the Yankees' play-by-play announcer, Michael Kay. "Aaron Judge with a clutch home run to tie this game in the ninth!" The score now knotted at 4-4, the game heads to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, the Red Sox load the bases against Yankees reliever Clay Holmes. Boston manager Alex Cora calls on his veteran outfielder, Kevin Pillar, to pinch-hit. Pillar works the count full, then laces a sharp ground ball down the first base line. Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo makes a diving stop, but in his haste to throw home, the ball sails past the catcher. Two runs score and the Red Sox take a 6-4 lead. "Rizzo couldn't handle it!" cries the Red Sox television announcer. "The Yankees will have to comeback again in the bottom half." In the bottom of the 10th, the Yankees mount one final rally. Judge singles to lead off the inning, bringing up slugger Giancarlo Stanton as the potential winning run. Stanton works the count to 3-2, then unloads on a fastball, sending it deep to right-center field. The crowd holds its breath as the ball sails towards the wall, but Verdugo is there to make the catch, preserving the Red Sox' 6-4 victory.
