What Happened

In Game 1 of the 2022 World Series between the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies, the game is tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jose Altuve steps up to the plate for the Astros with a 1-2 count. Altuve pops up a ball that drops in front of Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh, who was playing shallow in a "no doubles" defensive alignment. Altuve, thinking the ball would be caught, jogs to first base instead of running hard out of the box, potentially costing the Astros a chance at a double. With Altuve now on first base, he quickly steals second. The call on the field is safe, and after a brief replay review, the call stands. This puts the go-ahead run in scoring position for the Astros. Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos, who had been playing shallow, now has to move closer to the infield to try to throw out Altuve at home if the ball is hit to him. In the top of the 10th inning, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto steps up to the plate against Astros pitcher Luis Garcia. Garcia's unusual pre-pitch routine, where he "rocks the baby" with his glove, seems to throw off Realmuto. Garcia mixes his fastball and cutter effectively, getting ahead in the count 1-2. On the 3-2 pitch, Garcia goes back to the fastball, and Realmuto is able to poke it over the fence for a go-ahead solo home run. "That's a big pitch in the game," Realmuto says afterwards. "I was just trying to battle and put the ball in play." The Phillies now lead 6-5 as they bring in their closer, David Robertson, to face the heart of the Astros' order - Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, and Kyle Tucker. Robertson battles each hitter, mixing his fastball, curveball, and cutter effectively. He escapes the jam, striking out Bregman and getting Tucker to fly out, preserving the Phillies' one-run lead. "Robertson really stepped up there," Phillies manager Rob Thomson says. "That was a huge moment to hold that lead." The Phillies hold on to win Game 1 of the World Series, 6-5, taking an early series lead over the defending champion Astros.
