Fans throw trash on the field because obstruction was called on the catcher, a breakdown
What Happened
In a high-stakes playoff matchup, the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks are locked in a close, two-run game in the top of the ninth inning. Arizona's Jake McCarthy rips a ball to left field that goes over the fielder's head. He races around the bases and slides headfirst into home plate, but is called out by the umpire. The controversial play is challenged and reviewed. Replays show that Diamondbacks catcher Carson Kelly had positioned himself in front of the plate before receiving the throw, which is illegal under MLB's "catcher's interference" rule. The umpires overturn the call, ruling McCarthy safe at home. This incites a furious reaction from Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who vehemently argues the decision. "The rule doesn't make sense," Lovullo shouts. "As soon as he has the ball, he can block the plate." Lovullo is ejected for his outburst, but continues his protest, forming a "sit-in" at home plate and kicking dirt over it. The incensed Diamondbacks fans begin throwing trash onto the field, forcing the grounds crew to clean up the mess. The game resumes, with tensions still high. Yankees catcher Jose Trevino makes a pitch, and the Diamondbacks batter glares at him, thinking he threw at him intentionally. The umpire intervenes, calming the situation. However, the catcher is then ejected for continuing to argue with the umpire. This leads to a bizarre benches-clearing incident, with both teams spilling onto the field. The umpires warn all players and coaches to settle down, and the game continues. Despite the dramatic sequence of events, the Yankees ultimately hold on to win the closely contested playoff matchup, dashing the Diamondbacks' hopes of advancing further in the postseason.

inning. We are in the playoffs in Leum.
Did I say that correctly? We've got a
great play, but can't come up with the
throw. We have a review on a
controversial play. We've got an
ejection, a great ejection, and we got a
bizarre benches clearing. It's brought
to you by DraftKings. One runner on
first and that ball is smoked to left
field. It's going to be over the
fielder's head. He's going to gather it
on the hop, toss it in, relay it. He's
going home. The ball beats him. He's
tagged out. Umpire has the call. He's
out. Yes. Catcher's like, "What are you
doing, dude? You can't dive into me.
That's illegal now. No more collisions
in the game." And the other team is
like, "Well, maybe we collided cuz you
were cheating." So, they go to review
it. The man with the backpack comes out
and he gets on the headset and they're
going to look at it. Are they going to
look at safer out? Let's see. He rounds
third. The ball beats him by a good
amount and he's tagged. His right hand
does hit the plate. Clearly tagged.
Watch again the pitcher. He rings him up
early. Look at this. Right. Bam. He
beats the amp BY A LOT. OW. RIGHT behind
the going crazy. And then on the other
angle, let's see. Yeah, he's got control
of the ball. It's in the glove. And then
he puts a little left arm shiver into
his chest there, but he's out. He's out.
Now,
this rule about blocking the plate is
kind of a frustrating one. The rule says
the catcher cannot block the plate until
he has the ball or if he is moving into
the path of the thrown ball.
This catcher is set up
per the rule. He's blocking the plate
before the ball was even really thrown.
The ball was thrown right to him. How
they want the catcher to be set up is
that foot to be in fair territory like
this. And that's legal. Technically, per
the rule, that's not legal. I don't
agree with the interpretation of the
rule. I agree with the end result
they're trying to create, but that ball
beat him by a lot. And I don't think the
runner
was slowed down or his run was altered
because of the situation. He tried to
dive into him and cause him to miss the
play. But what happens is they look at
where he was set up before the ball
comes and they say he's safe because he
was blocking the plate. Now the manager
of the other team is yelling right away
and the umpire is going to run over and
says and you're gone. I don't even want
to hear it at all. And this is our
friend Pipe or Pipe. He's been with the
Diamondbacks, the Marlins. He's been all
He's a good friend of John Boy Media and
he gets his money's worth in this
ejection. Now he's frustrated because of
they went up to review and they
overturned it. So he can't really be
frustrated with him right here, but he
is frustrated with him right here. Even
though that guy he called out, you know,
they said out, but he's frustrated
because they went up to review and he
said it's a dumb rule. The rule doesn't
make sense because as soon as he has the
ball, he can block at the plate and the
ball's coming right to him and the guy's
over there. He's not in his way. I think
I'm I would guess he's saying that by
the time the catcher caught the ball,
the guy was so far away, it didn't even
matter. You know, it's not a bang bang
play. He's actually going to form a
peaceful protest here. He's going to
have a sit in on home plate. I'm not
leaving. I'm not leaving. No. What I
what I gather he's saying is once he has
the ball, the catcher can sit on the
damn plate. Who cares? He's got the
ball. And now he's yelling at that guy
cuz he made the call. And the home plate
umpire, he was at third base and that
that guy made the call that he wanted.
He's just mad.
That's a great move. He Look at this
spin move. Work it. Watch this. I'm
leaving. Oh, one more thing. Actually, a
lot more things. I'm still mad. First
and foremost, big important game. I
don't know if you guys are noticing the
camera work that's going on. We've got a
damn film set. Watch this. This guy on
this camera, I sped it up. He runs out
and he's going to do a full 360 of this
action. And the the truck stays with him
the whole time. I mean, are we watching
a baseball fight or an art piece? And
then he's screaming some more. He's
saying, "Why am I ejected? Eject the
replay guy. Get him out of here." And
then he's going to kick dirt over home
plate. Home plate. I'm like, "Oh god."
Okay. And he's going to draw plate over
there. So that's where home plate has to
be in the example I showed. That's where
they want the catcher to stand. I don't
know if that's what he's saying, so I
can't translate, but you know, you can
just infer here. And he's mad. That
should be out in my opinion. I
understand the rule. I understand rules
have caveats if you want them enforced,
right? Because it's got to be letter of
the law and all that stuff, but uh he's
review you. You're out. The fans got
upset. It's a big important game. Only
the top two advance. He's cleaning up
the garbage. Purdomo is cleaning up the
garbage. We got It's everywhere. It's
just don't throw stuff on the field.
Come on. It stinks. It delays the game.
It serves no purpose. But the crew got
to clean it up. Then they got the dap up
third baseman. So they're pumped about
it. Anyway, this is where things get
even more odd, I guess. The game
continues. You've got a runner on
second. Catcher calls the pitch. We're
going to get an 85 mph like slider or
something here. And the batter thinks
he's throwing at him and gives him a
death stare.
And the umpire is actually going to talk
to him like, "Come on, dude. You really
going to start stuff? Everyone's heated
enough. We just had a delay." And the
catcher's like, "Yo, he's not throwing
at you, man. Come on." The whole office
was like, "This catcher looks like a
player.
This catcher looks like JD Martinez."
There was other people saying looks like
a kind of a MLB guy that did the rounds
as a utility infielder. We looked it up.
He's not any of those players. Now,
they're talking and he's saying, "It's
okay. We're fine." And then the catcher,
this is my guess because I don't really
understand it. Looks like the catcher
might be talking to the pitcher a little
bit, saying like, "Let's go. Let's go.
Come on. Cuz the batter turns his head
right there.
Like really, dude? Really? And then the
umpire calls time cuz he wants to stop
all this from happening. And catcher's
like, "No, I'm talking to him." Like,
"No, I'm talking to him." And the
umpire's like, "Yo, I told you not to
start anything." And you're starting
stuff, so you're gone. That's a weird
sequence of events. And then we got is
that the third baseman runs in to get
him out of there which leads to the
benches and our camera guy coming out.
Now he's got the camera up over his
head. He got a lot of people and he's
circling. He's getting good shots and
they cut to the drone and everyone's
just going to clear out. That was weird.
Someone in the know tell me what the
hell that was all about. Umpire's like,
"Yeah, I I I don't want this to be
anything." We got heated moments already
got ejections. pitcher's like, "Did I do
anything wrong? Am I at fault?" And then
and then it looks like the the other
team comes out and they're like, "Yo,
are you gonna give us warnings? Everyone
should have warnings, right? Otherwise,
they're they might just they might hit
us." I don't know. It looks like he
tells them to warn everyone. He says,
"You know what? That's a good call.
That's a good call. You're warned. And
you guys over there, you're warned.
Now you've both been warned.
Let's cut the Everyone in the
crowd, you're warned.
They go and get this out and then they
go and get the next out and then they go
and they lose the game. Thank you very
much to Draft Games for sponsoring the
