Fans are in danger when Kyle Schwarber homers off Yu Darvish, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the score is tied as Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Schwarber steps to the plate against Yu Darvish of the San Diego Padres. The crowd is electric, as this postseason matchup has high stakes for both teams. Darvish winds up and delivers a hanging slider, which Schwarber absolutely crushes into the upper deck. The ball sails into the crowd, where a fan holding his young daughter instinctively leaps up to try and catch it. The fan's sudden movement causes his daughter's feet to briefly go over the protective railing, creating a dangerous situation before they safely come back down. Schwarber's teammates on the Cubs bench erupt in excitement, with Bryce Harper's mouth agape in disbelief at the mammoth home run. The replay shows the pitch from Darvish, a slider that stayed up in the zone, which Schwarber pounces on and drives deep into the stands. The game now moves to the next at-bat, with Darvish trying to bounce back. He starts Schwarber off with an outside pitch for a strike. Schwarber then fouls off several pitches, putting up a hard-fought at-bat against the veteran right-hander. Darvish tries a variety of offerings, including sliders and fastballs, but Schwarber is dialed in. Finally, on a 2-2 count, Darvish goes with a splitter that Schwarber crushes for another home run. This one also sails into the crowd, where another fan leaps up to try and catch the ball. His momentum carries him dangerously over the railing, but he is able to pull himself back safely. In the chaos, one fan's phone is knocked out of his hand and falls to the ground below. The home runs by Schwarber have the Cubs bench and fans going wild, while the Padres dugout is dejected. Announcers Mark DeRosa and Mike Trout provide commentary, noting the need for caution when Schwarber is at the plate and the ball is flying into the stands. They emphasize the importance of fan safety in these types of high-intensity playoff moments.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentI have stumbled into something a little
concerning this breakdown is brought to
you by DraftKings and this is schwarber
versus Darvish in the postseason last
year first pitch little slider and
schwarber smokes it into the upper deck
into the crowd here's his teammates
they're excited Bryce Harper can't
believe it oh mouth a gape everybody is
excited about it look at the replay just
kind of a hanging slider dead center
absolutely crushed by schwarber Darvish
he doesn't like it and I'm not a fan
either because this scared me when I was
watching it this fan holding his
daughter he jumps for the ball your
front row sir her feet kind of come up
above the protective glass right there
that's too high and he's off the ground
and then her feet are going to kind of
slam down I wasn't a big fan but
whatever it's not that dangerous well
okay schwarber versus Darvish in the war
World Baseball Classic outside pitch for
strike one little breaking ball of sorts
shakes off that says I just went kind of
soft let's throw something fast stay
outside outside again soft two in one
back inside with the slider and
schwarber's like that's the one I
remember I like that so inside with the
fastball now he's ahead of it that goes
way into the crowd it's Robert's
thinking I'm on this I want this I like
hitting against this guy 2-2 that's the
same slider in the middle that he
crushed he fouls that one off another
pitch in the middle fouls that one off
and Darvish is like nope I want to go
the fastball again so he goes a little
pinky finger inside fastball little
pinky finger 2-2 pitch shorbers fouled
everything off
and he fouls that one off as well into
the crowd bounces around these three
guys fight for it they lose it and this
guy comes up with it like a hero stole
her heart look at that all right 2-2 now
what's he go with another breaking ball
another foul ball shorbers putting up a
hell of it at bat goes with the splitter
and there's the Home Run he's looking
for right into this Fan's hands and
schwarber's thinking all right finally
Darvish says oh
that guy might hit me really well this
time it was the splitter not the slider
as you can see here and this time it was
more dangerous than the last
I don't this is I mean troubling when
schwarber hits a home run off Darvish
don't be in the front row look at this
guy he's gonna jump right he jumps for
the ball holy scary both knees
are over the railing right there both
knees are on top of the railing that's
so scary look at that his momentum is
going forward at this point and he comes
down on his sternum on the railing
and thank God he doesn't fall but his
buddy next to him his phone drops out of
his pocket and that's a goner and he's
like oh no and there you go see it lit
up falling down hopefully he didn't hit
someone on the head
just be careful
if you're in the upper deck in Philly
or watching the Phillies play your team
at home and you're in the upper deck and
schwarber's in home runs especially you
Padres fans just be careful you know
dangerous things are happening when he's
going deep DeRosa doesn't care about the
phone neither does trout these guys
don't care it's a gentlest high five for
two guys dressed up like this you think
they'd be the ones going crazy but
instead it's these guys going absolutely
crazy and these guys giving the gentlest
of high fives like look at this they
line it up they get to the spot and then
they move forward perfectly look at the
jiggle of their forearms
totally in sync perfect high five and
you know what maybe they know what I now
know they got to be safe when schwarber
goes deep off Darvish let's do a gentle
high five this one was brought to you by
