Eddie Rosario guns down Rafael Devers to end the game, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the ninth inning of a close game between the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox, the score is tied 3-3. Rafael Devers of the Red Sox rips a double to left field, putting the tying run on base for Boston. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez steps up to the plate, representing the potential winning run for the home team. Martinez works the count and then laces a base hit to right field, sending Devers sprinting around the bases towards home plate. But Twins right fielder Eddie Rosario fields the ball cleanly and uncorks a powerful throw towards the plate. Devers tries to beat the throw, but Rosario's laser-like strike is on target, allowing Twins catcher Mitch Garver to apply the tag and end the game. The Twins players erupt in celebration on the field, while the Red Sox dugout is left stunned by the game-ending play. "What a throw! What a play!" exclaims the announcer, marveling at Rosario's clutch defensive heroics to preserve the tie game. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli praises his team's effort, saying "That's the kind of stuff that wins you ball games right there. Eddie made an unbelievable play." Red Sox manager Alex Cora, meanwhile, laments his team's missed opportunity, noting "We had the tying run at the plate, but Rosario made a heck of a throw to get Devers at the plate and that ended up being the ballgame." As the Twins players mob Rosario in the outfield, the right fielder simply shrugs and says "I was just trying to make a good throw and get the out. Luckily it all worked out." With the dramatic victory, the Twins keep their slim playoff hopes alive, while the Red Sox are left to ponder what might have been on this crushing defeat.
