Dylan Moore throws home to nobody to get the out, a breakdown
What Happened
In a tight game between the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros, the score is 1-0 in favor of the Astros in the late innings. Mariners pitcher Wade LeBlanc is on the mound and the Astros have runners on first and second base with a chance to add to their lead. Mariners shortstop Dylan Moore fields a ground ball and has a chance to turn an inning-ending double play. Instead of throwing to first base, Moore decides to throw home to try to get the runner at the plate. However, the Mariners catcher has already left the plate, leaving no one there to receive Moore's throw. The ball sails to the backstop, allowing the runner from third to score and give the Astros a 2-0 lead. The Mariners dugout and coaching staff react with a mix of disbelief and frustration at the mistake. LeBlanc, the pitcher, looks stunned that the play unfolded the way it did. The Astros' Josh Reddick, who was the runner on first base, appears amused by the mishap, smiling and shaking his head. "The play should have been over there or I should have turned it over there," Reddick says, acknowledging that the Mariners had a chance to end the inning if the play had been executed correctly. Despite the defensive lapse, the Mariners are able to turn the double play on the next batter, but the damage has been done and they trail 2-0. The body language and reactions of the Mariners players and coaches suggest a sense of disappointment and frustration with the missed opportunity to limit the Astros' lead. The Mariners will have to regroup and try to mount a comeback against the American League West-leading Astros, who have now extended their advantage in the late stages of the game.
