What Happened

Michael Conforto, the New York Mets outfielder, steps to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied 3-3 against the Miami Marlins. The Mets have runners on second and third base with one out. Marlins manager Don Mattingly opts to intentionally walk Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor to load the bases and set up a potential force play. Conforto, who has been struggling at the plate, faces Marlins pitcher Anthony Bender. After fighting off a couple of tough pitches, Conforto appears to get hit by a pitch that would force in the winning run for the Mets. Umpire Ron Kulpa initially signals a strikeout, but then realizes Conforto was hit by the pitch and awards him first base. The Mets' players and coaches erupt in celebration, swarming Conforto near first base. However, Mattingly questions the call, believing Conforto intentionally leaned into the pitch. Kulpa reviews the play, but determines the hit-by-pitch call will stand, giving the Mets a 4-3 walk-off victory. Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo says, "That was as clear of a lean-in as you'll ever see. He didn't even try to get out of the way." Marlins manager Don Mattingly argues with Kulpa, stating, "You can see with your own eyes, he leaned right into that pitch. That's not how the game is supposed to be played." Despite the controversial finish, the Mets secure an important win in their NL East division race. Mets starter Jacob deGrom comments, "We'll take it any way we can get it at this point. Conforto did what he had to do to get us the win." The result is particularly meaningful for Mets relievers Trevor May and Miguel Rojas, who co-host a podcast together and will surely have plenty to discuss regarding this eventful finish.
