Cat on the field, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the eighth inning at Coors Field, the Colorado Rockies are hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers and trailing in the game. Suddenly, a cat is spotted on the railing of the stadium, distracting everyone on the field and in the stands. The cat, described as "gross" and "furry," leaps down into the seats and starts scurrying around, much to the dismay of the players and fans. Dodgers pitcher Phil Bickford is about to throw his next pitch when the Dodgers signal for a delay, not wanting to continue with the cat roaming the field. The cat then beelines towards the infield, with the commentators joking that it has "no loved ones" and has "spent the last week in a dumpster." The cat finds itself in the middle of the field, clearly disoriented and unsure of its surroundings. Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger approaches cautiously, not wanting to get too close to the stray cat. "No, no, stay away," Bellinger warns, as the cat takes off running towards the warning track. A woman in the stands starts chasing the cat, finally catching it and attempting to carry it off the field, hoping not to get "scratched and clawed to death." Just as the woman is walking the cat off the field, the Rockies' animal control specialist, a man with a ponytail, steps in and takes the cat, saying he'll "take it back to our home." Moments after the cat is removed, the Rockies get a hit, with the commentators joking that the "rally cat" didn't help and may have even hurt the Rockies' chances. The fan in the stands is left wondering, "Oh my god, I thought we had the rally cat, though. What about the rally cat?" The incident serves as a reminder that unexpected events can occur during a baseball game and the presence of a stray cat on the field can certainly create a memorable and amusing moment.
