Brock Holt gets stuck and gives Hunter Pence an inside-the-park home run, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the 9th inning at Fenway Park, the Texas Rangers' veteran outfielder Hunter Pence steps up to the plate with his team trailing the Boston Red Sox by a run. The 36-year-old Pence, in his 13th MLB season, has been having a strong year so far and he's looking to come through in the clutch. Pence takes the pitch and flicks it down the left field line. Boston left fielder Brock Holt races over, thinking he has a chance to make the catch and end the game. But as Holt reaches the ball, he gets stuck in the infamous Fenway Park wall, unable to corral the hit. Pence never stops running and circles the bases, recording an inside-the-park home run to tie the game. "I just kind of got stuck in the wall there," Holt says afterward. "The ball was right there, I just couldn't get to it." Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts eventually retrieves the ball, but by that point Pence has already scored the tying run. "That counts, right?" Pence asks, a bit bewildered by the unusual circumstances. "I'm too tired to do it all over again." Betts confirms that yes, the inside-the-park homer will indeed count, much to Pence's relief. Holt, meanwhile, is left shaking his head at his misfortune. "Sometimes you just get stuck in those positions and you're like, 'Why did I do this?'" he says. "My back is gonna hurt tomorrow." In the end, Pence's unlikely inside-the-park home run proved crucial, as the Rangers went on to win the game and move one step closer to clinching a playoff spot. It was a zany, unexpected moment in this long-standing rivalry between the Rangers and Red Sox, one that will surely be remembered for its sheer quirkiness.
