What Happened

In a tight NL West clash, the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers are locked in a close game in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Giants hold a narrow one-run lead as Dodgers star Mookie Betts steps to the plate. Betts puts the ball in play and Giants third baseman Chris Bryant fields it cleanly for the first out. Dodgers veteran Justin Turner then singles to left field, putting the tying run on base. The next batter, a Dodger, also hits a single to left, moving Turner to third base. The Giants outfielder cuts the ball off before it can reach the wall, preventing the runner from scoring and keeping the tying run at third. With two outs in the ninth, the Dodgers are just one hit away from tying the game. The next batter fouls the ball back, leaving the Giants just one out away from victory. The ball is then put back into play and the Giants catcher, Buster Posey, fields it and throws home to try to get the tagging runner at the plate. The umpire signals that the runner, Turner, is out, meaning the Giants have recorded the final out and won the game. However, the players seem confused about the ruling. Turner, thinking he is out, begins to leave the field, while the Giants' Posey realizes he has tagged the wrong runner. Posey then tags the other Dodgers baserunner, Brandon Seager, who was already out. "The base goes to the lead runner," explains Giants manager Gabe Kapler, trying to clarify the situation for the umpire. "He was already out." The umpire agrees and the Dodgers' Turner is allowed to return to third base, the tying run still in scoring position. On the very next pitch, the Dodgers get the hit they need, tying the game and sending it to extra innings. "That play could have ended the game," laments Kapler. "But the Dodgers got lucky there." Despite the bizarre sequence, the Giants ultimately prevail, winning the game in extra frames. "You can't count the Giants out," says the narrator. "They just find a way to win, no matter what happens.".
