Anthony Volpe hits a grand slam in the World Series, a breakdown
What Happened
In Game 4 of the World Series, the New York Yankees trail the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Yankees superstar outfielder Aaron Judge steps up to the plate with the bases loaded and his team down by one run. On the first pitch, Judge is hit in the hand by the Dodgers pitcher, loading the bases with one out. Next, Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton comes to the plate. Stanton swings and misses a breaking ball that dives away, then gets knocked down by a high, inside fastball. However, the umpire rules that Stanton swung, so it's not a hit-by-pitch. With the bases still loaded, first baseman Anthony Rizzo steps in and pops out, bringing rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe to the plate with two outs. Volpe, who at 23 years old is one of the youngest players to ever appear in a World Series game, jumps on the first pitch and crushes a grand slam home run over the wall. The Yankees dugout erupts in celebration as Volpe rounds the bases, putting New York up 5-2. Judge and the other veterans excitedly embrace Volpe, whose dramatic blast has kept the Yankees alive in the series. In the top of the next inning, Volpe makes a sparkling defensive play at shortstop, starting a double play to help preserve the Yankees' lead. "This is how the bugs saw the home run - boom, got the barrel out," the announcer says, replaying Volpe's mammoth grand slam from the unique "bug's eye view" camera angle. "Fourth youngest all time with a grand slam in the World Series, 23 years 184 days young," the announcer notes, underscoring just how impressive Volpe's heroics are at such a young age. With their season on the line, the Yankees have found a new star in Anthony Volpe, whose timely grand slam has kept their World Series dreams alive.
