Adam Eaton and Dave Martinez get ejected in the first inning, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the first inning, Washington Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton steps up to the plate to lead off the inning. Eaton takes a close pitch for ball four, drawing a walk. However, home plate umpire Tim Timmons calls the pitch a strike, much to Eaton's dismay. Eaton turns to Timmons and voices his disagreement with the call, leading to a heated exchange between the two. Nationals manager Dave Martinez quickly comes out of the dugout to defend his player. Martinez argues vehemently with Timmons, also questioning the umpire's strike zone. Despite Martinez's pleas, Timmons decides to eject both Eaton and Martinez from the game for their heated outbursts. The crowd at Nationals Park erupts in cheers, clearly siding with their home team in the confrontation. Martinez continues to argue with Timmons, gesturing emphatically to illustrate where he believes the pitch was located. Timmons stands firm, however and the ejections stand. As Martinez departs the field, he dramatically flips his lineup card to his bench coach before heading to the clubhouse. The fans roar in approval, appreciating Martinez's passionate defense of his player. The first-inning ejections have certainly set an eventful tone for the rest of the game between the Nationals and their opponents. Despite the early fireworks, the game must go on. With Eaton and Martinez now ejected, the Nationals will need to regroup and find a way to overcome the loss of their starting outfielder and manager this early in the contest. The stakes are high, as both teams look to gain ground in their respective divisions. This on-field confrontation between players, managers and umpires is sure to be a talking point long after the final out is recorded.
