What Happened

In the top of the sixth inning on July 24, 2014, the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates are locked in a tight 1-1 game at PNC Park. With two outs, Reds first baseman Joey Votto is hit by a pitch from Pirates pitcher Vance Worley to lead off the inning. Second baseman Brandon Phillips then grounds out, advancing Votto to second base. Next, outfielder Jay Bruce steps to the plate for the Reds and strikes out swinging, leaving Votto in scoring position with two outs. Up comes third baseman Todd Frazier, who is 1-for-2 with a double in the game so far. Frazier takes the first pitch, then ropes the second offering from Worley, also getting hit by the pitch and reaching base. With two Reds batters now having been hit by pitches in the inning, outfielder Ryan Ludwick strides to the plate. Ludwick had previously been hit by a pitch earlier in the game, so he's out for a bit of revenge on behalf of the "hit-by-pitch crew." On the first pitch from Worley, Ludwick crushes a ball to the gap in right-center field. Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen races over and makes a diving attempt, but the ball gets past him and rolls to the wall. Both Votto and Frazier come around to score, giving the Reds a 3-1 lead. Ludwick slides into second base with a two-run double, pumping his fist in celebration. The Reds' dugout erupts, happy to see their teammate avenge the earlier hit-by-pitches. In the stands, a woman in a bright pink purse watches the action unfold, no doubt thrilled by the Reds' comeback. The 3-1 score would hold up as the final, with the Reds securing the victory. Ludwick's heroics in the sixth inning proved to be the difference, as the Reds avenged their earlier plunkings and emerged victorious in the NL Central matchup.
