Pirates Comeback to beat The Padres in Extras | Jakes Burn of the Day
What Happened
The Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres engage in a back-and-forth battle that goes the distance, with the Pirates pulling off an incredible comeback victory in extra innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. delivers an RBI single to score Austin Nola, giving the Padres a 3-2 lead. However, the Pirates regain the advantage in the bottom of the sixth, as Starling Marte hits a sacrifice fly and Bryan Reynolds and Jacob Stallings each record RBI singles, making it 5-3 Pirates. The seesaw affair continues in the top of the eighth, as Manny Machado rips two RBI singles, tying the game at 5-5. But in the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates refuse to go quietly, rallying for a three-run inning to send the game to extra frames. In the top of the 11th, Austin Nola strikes again with a two-run single, putting the Padres up 7-5. However, the resilient Pirates refuse to surrender, as Stallings hits an RBI double and Kevin Newman draws a walk-off walk, completing an improbable 11-10 victory for the home team. "It was a battle out there, but we never stopped fighting," says Pirates outfielder Starling Marte. "This team has a lot of heart and we proved that today." Padres manager Jayce Tingler expresses his disappointment, stating, "We had multiple opportunities to put this game away and we just couldn't close it out. Credit to the Pirates for never giving up and finding a way to win." The thrilling extra-inning affair showcases the resilience and determination of both squads, as the Pirates mount not one, but two late-inning comebacks to stun the Padres and secure the series sweep.
