What Happened

In the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 1 of the National League Division Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers are leading the San Diego Padres 3-1. Padres manager Jayce Tingler is growing increasingly frustrated with the umpiring, especially after a controversial call in the third inning that resulted in Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. being struck out. Now, Mookie Betts of the Dodgers steps to the plate against Padres pitcher Garrett Richards. Betts fouls off a couple of pitches before drawing a ball on a close pitch. Tingler argues vehemently that the pitch to Tatis earlier was equally as outside, yet was called a strike. Tensions are high as Tingler feels the umpires are being inconsistent with their strike zone. The at-bat continues and Betts rips a double down the line, with Trea Turner scoring from first base. Betts pumps his fist and celebrates his hit, much to the dismay of Tingler. The Padres manager storms out to the mound and a heated exchange can be heard on the hot mics. Tingler tells the umpire, "Can you hold Mookie Betts down? Jake, we're really letting the whole play go down by our lamp spirit." Suddenly, home plate umpire Lance Barrett ejects Tingler from the game. The Padres manager is stunned, not realizing he has been tossed. He continues to argue and stare down Barrett, unsure of what has just happened. Finally, it dawns on Tingler that he has been ejected and he unleashes a furious tirade, saying, "Me? He tossed me?" Tingler is clearly upset about the perceived inconsistencies in the umpiring and feels his team is being unfairly disadvantaged. As Tingler exits the field, the cameras capture his parting words, which include some colorful language directed at the umpires. The Padres dugout is visibly frustrated, with pitcher Garrett Richards showing his displeasure on the bench. This heated exchange between Tingler and the umpires has added to the intensity of the NLDS matchup between the Dodgers and Padres, two bitter rivals with a lot at stake.
