Umpires huddle up for a long time to confirm that the Padres reliever was balking, a breakdown
What Happened
In a tightly contested game between the San Diego Padres and an unnamed opposing team, the Padres take an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. However, the game quickly takes an unexpected turn as the opposing team rallies, loading the bases with walks and a base hit. Justin Turner of the opposing team steps up to the plate and hits a sacrifice fly, allowing two runs to score and making it a 3-2 game. The opposing team continues to threaten, with another base hit allowing the tying run to score. The game is now tied 3-3, with runners in scoring position and only one out. As the opposing team attempts a bunt, the umpires suddenly call time and huddle together for an extended discussion. The home plate umpire then approaches the Padres' manager and explains that the pitcher has been called for a balk, which allows the go-ahead run to score, making it 5-3 Padres. The umpire takes his time carefully explaining the ruling to the manager, noting that the pitcher stopped his motion during the windup, which is not allowed with runners on base. Replays show the pitcher clearly pausing his delivery on the second pitch, leading to the balk call. The opposing team's dugout is visibly frustrated, as they had thought the balk was called on the third pitch, not the second. The pitcher, realizing his mistake, throws the ball away in frustration after the balk is announced. The inning finally ends with a line-out, but the damage has been done. The Padres, who had been cruising early, now find themselves trailing 5-3 after a chaotic first inning that featured multiple walks, base hits, a sacrifice fly, and a controversial balk call. The game has taken a dramatic turn, and the opposing team will look to build on their newfound momentum as they try to complete the comeback against the Padres.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentOne of the worst first innings you will
see. This breakdown is brought to you by
DraftKings. And the game opens up with
the walk to my dude Happer. That's not
good. You don't want to walk, guys. It's
a free base runner. They lead to free
runs. The next batter steps up. Ball
inside. Catcher says, "Come on. Bring it
up. Get it to me. Come on. Come on." No,
dude. No, it's longer than that. You
have to throw it farther than that.
Let's have a mound visit. Seven pitches
in. Mound visit. Not a great start, but
you know, get ahead of it early. Get
ahead of it early. Hey guy, throw the
strikes. You know, come on now. This is
the bigs. 20 ball
three. Ball four. Mound visit did not
work. So now you've got the first two
batters are on.
Walk. You don't want them to come around
and score. That would be bad. You got to
buckle down. Ball
one. Ball two. Okay. Are we going to
swing here? We going to make something
happen?
strike two and one hits it. It goes
foul. And we're going to pause the video
and spend some time on this cuz it's a
good it's a good foul ball. You've got
this guy. It hits his hands. Oh, he
can't believe it. He's almost mad at his
fist. He's like,
"Oh, well, you betrayed me hand. What
the hell? It hit my [ __ ] hand. Right
in my hand. D hit my [ __ ] Come on." on.
And then you've got this dude in the
sunglasses who just starts diving for it
and then just falls and then the woman
next to him has to help him up. And then
you got this guy all the way in the back
who just doesn't move at all and the
ball falls into his lap. And there's
some life lesson to be learned here. You
know, hits off that guy's head. This
dude, he doesn't stand up. He's not
interested at all. The foul ball finds
him. He says, "Hey guys, I got it." They
say, "You look like you're from Chicago,
dude." And he's like, "I know." Or
there's this girl who's just laughing at
the whole thing. Which one are you?
Here's a cool shot off the hand.
Floating. Floating right into his gut.
He deserved it. Don't be overzealous.
Back to the game. Two two pitch. Two
runners on. A little slider on the
inside that lands fair. That's going to
score one run and then we got runners on
third and we got a runner on first. They
hold him to just a single, which is nice
because the double plays in order. And
that's good. Oh no, Justin Turner comes
up next. That's a sack fly. Both of the
guys that walked to start the game have
come around to score. It's three to two.
Padres's thought they were in a laugher.
Three nothing in the first. Turns out
they might be the laugh, not the
laughers. Another walk. Two on, no outs.
There's a strike. There's a There's a
ball. There's a strike. There's a foul
ball. We're ahead. Two- two. We're even.
We're ahead kind of two. One. Oh,
another good at bat. Good at bat here.
Full count. Foul ball. And then a base
hit up the middle. Double play ball. No.
Off the glove. That's going to score a
run. And they get to second cuz no one
covered the bag. It's just not good.
It's a tie game. There's one out, two in
scoring position. Right off of his
glove. So close. And then the glove
slowed it down which allowed the runner
to get to second. So now you don't have
the double play in order. We're going to
lay down a bunt. And they say, "Thank
you. We've been struggling to get outs.
So we appreciate the bunt because we
were really struggling to get out." He
said, "Okay, well at least there's not
two in scoring position now. There's
only one. That's good. Double play is
in." Ah [ __ ] He's still sucking double
play. They don't even need a double
play. What are you talking about, Jimmy?
Why don't you shut up about it? We got a
ball on the outside. We got a ball on
the inside. We got a ball on the
outside. We got a ball on the outside.
Another walk. Base is loaded. They say,
"You know what? Let's bring in another
guy." He's like, "Wedding ring off. What
up, Blue?" Secret handshake with the
umpire there. Base is loaded. Two outs.
New pitchers in. Second pitch. Nice
strike. And now here's where things get
interesting. Before he even starts
throwing his third pitch, the third base
umpire is calling time. He's like, "Hey,
stop. Stop. Time. Time. Everybody.
everybody that looks like me that's
wearing the same clothes, I need to
talk. They talk for a long time, like a
really long time. And the coaches are
just standing there being like, "What
are they talking about? I'd like to know
what are they discussing." And then he
says, "Okay, you guys want to know so
bad? I'll tell you." Goes and finds the
coach and he's going to let him know we
got a b. He's like, "Yeah, we got to b
here on the second pitch." And the
umpire is going to speak very slow,
almost one word at a time and really
break it down. He says, "You can't stop
after the
windup and you stopped." Yep, that's it.
Then he's going to go Horatio Sans, take
the sunglasses off. Respectful eye
contact with the manager and then he's
going to let him know. He's going to go
first one he did not. He kept going.
Second one he stopped and I noticed it.
You cannot stop and then throw the ball
to the plate. You can't stop
moving. He came to his set
stopped after you start your motion.
That's a B from the windup. That's what
we have. So I think the confusion. So a
run scores, but to break it down,
they're not calling a B on the third
pitch, which is what everyone thought
because if you if you were to just watch
the pitcher here, right? If I zoom in
here and just show you the picture, a
lot of people would think
that the bulk was called on this one,
which it could have been cuz he does
stop right there. But it actually
wasn't. It was called on the second
pitch. Just very delayed because I think
the umpire has to wait to see is he
going to throw to third or is he going
to go to home plate because he can't
call a buck until he sees him go back to
home plate after stopping. I think on
that part, I don't know. Or maybe
obviously they had a long visit with all
the umpires. So maybe the third base
umpire's like, "Hey, this is what I got.
I just want to make sure the rules
right." So it's weird that he didn't
call it right away because it's it's on
the second pitch, not on the third
pitch, which was never thrown. And that
confused some for you at home. And you
want to be like, did he stop? Well,
here's this angle and right there he is
stopped. And that's what they're saying
you cannot do and is a bulk. Here's
another angle of it. And right there he
stops. And if you at home want to see if
you can figure this out, if you can play
detective, leave a comment below. Which
one did he does he stop in? The left or
the right? You guys tell me which one is
it that he's stop and Okay, did you
figure it out? It's quite easy. If
that's the rule and the umpire's got it
correct, which I trust them to get it
correct, it's quite an easy rule. The
next pitch is a ball. The 3 0 is a
strike. And then the 3-1 pitch, we're
getting back in the count. He's
fighting. That is another foul ball. One
strike away, but uh oh, he's stopped
right there. They say, "Balk, b." So, he
throws it away because he heard them
yell balk, realized he boked, realized
another run scored. And he did because
he stopped. And like that guy said, you
can't stop. See, look, one, two, and
he's stopping. And that's something that
you're not allowed to do from the wind
up with runners on. Shield is just
looking out there like, this is bad. We
were up three nothing and I thought it
was going to be fun. Turns out it's not
fun. Umpire's like, I did my job. You
know, no one's mad at me about it. And
then 3-2, make a pitch. Make a pitch.
Fast ball caught. Line drive out of the
inning. 5 to3 Padres's. Wild one. And it
was brought to you by DraftKings, who
sponsor a lot of the breakdowns I make.
And I thank you guys for watching them.
And I thank them for sponsoring them.
And now I will rest my
