Pirates fan takes home run ball to the nuts, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the second inning of a closely contested game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh outfielder Carlos Santana steps up to the plate. With the score tied 2-2, Santana swings at the pitch and sends a towering fly ball deep into the stands. Fans in the right field bleachers scramble to try and catch the potential game-changing home run. One unlucky Pirates fan, a young man sitting with his friends, reaches up to grab the ball as it sails towards him. However, the ball takes an unexpected bounce and strikes him directly in the groin, eliciting a painful reaction from the fan. Umpire Bill Miller immediately calls for a review of the play and the video replay clearly shows the ball clearing the outfield wall before bouncing back onto the field. "Hold up, son," Miller says to the fan. "We'll take a look at this for you." The Padres coaching staff is summoned and after a brief conference, Miller signals that the play will stand as a home run for Santana, much to the delight of the Pirates faithful in attendance. As the replay is shown on the stadium's video board, the crowd erupts in laughter at the unfortunate fan's misfortune. "Andy Griffith's laughing, is like 'okay I can't laugh, hold it back,'" the announcer observes, as the fan's friends can be seen doubled over in hysterics right next to him. "That kid didn't want to interfere with the ball," the announcer notes. "Got to protect yourself though." The fan's pained expression and the comical reaction of those around him create a memorable moment that will undoubtedly be the talk of the stadium long after the game has ended. Despite the unfortunate incident, Santana's home run gives the Pirates a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The game remains closely contested, with both teams fighting to gain the upper hand. As the fans settle back into their seats, they eagerly anticipate the next twist and turn in this thrilling matchup between the National League foes.
