Outfielder drops ball over fence for home run, a breakdown
What Happened
In a minor league baseball game, the Oklahoma team leads 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning with two outs. The opposing center fielder tracks down a deep fly ball to right-center field. As he approaches the wall, the center fielder makes an incredible leaping catch, colliding with the outfield fence. However, the ball pops out of his glove and sails over the fence for a home run. The center fielder immediately calls "Out!" even though the ball has left the playing field. He then performs an acrobatic maneuver, running along the wall and jumping as if he had successfully made the catch. The crowd remains silent, except for one fan in a blue shirt who appears to realize the ball has left the park. The umpires confer and determine that the play should be ruled a home run, as the center fielder did not maintain control of the ball throughout the catch. "It's a home run because he didn't complete the catch," one umpire explains. The home run increases Oklahoma's lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning. The play demonstrates the nuanced nature of the "catch" rule in baseball, where a fielder must maintain possession of the ball throughout the process of the catch to record an out. Despite the center fielder's impressive effort, the ball leaving the playing area overrules his initial "Out!" call. This minor league matchup features two teams looking to gain an advantage in the standings. The home squad's lead grows to three runs, putting them in a strong position to potentially close out the game. The center fielder's misplay on the deep fly ball, while initially ruled an out, ultimately results in a home run that extends the visiting team's advantage.

he's like oh no does that mean what does that mean the umps get together they're like i think
it's a home run because he didn't complete the catch i guess they didn't really show a replay
of this i don't think they reviewed it maybe they don't care maybe you have to have a certain amount
of fans in the stands to review plays what do you guys think i mean imo that's a catch
but sometimes the catch rules as everyone knows by the letter of the law and the semantics is
pretty frustrating to follow along but i mean that's got to be a catch i mean he's just like
kind of running like like i've seen guys make this catch and then they run up right here and
they give it to a fan but maybe that's because they have control of it the whole time while
they do that i just love how he realizes he doesn't have the ball and he's like out though
out don't worry about where the ball is totally just an out nice catch by me
