Mets comeback in the 9th to walk off the Orioles, a breakdown
What Happened
The New York Mets stage a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk off the Baltimore Orioles. With the Mets trailing by one run, relief pitcher Cesar Valdez of the Orioles takes the mound. Michael Conforto of the Mets smokes a ball to left field, but the umpires rule it a foul ball. Valdez then continues to work with his signature "dead fish" changeup, keeping the Mets hitters off-balance. However, the Mets rally with a hit and then a double to put runners on first and second base with no outs. Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith steps up and laces a game-tying double to right-center field, sending the Citi Field crowd into a frenzy. The go-ahead run is now on third base, setting the stage for rookie Pat Mazzica's at-bat. Mazzica, making just his fourth career plate appearance, battles Valdez and hits a slow roller that plates the winning run, giving the Mets a dramatic 2-1 victory. As the Mets celebrate, first baseman Pete Alonso and outfielder Brandon Nimmo both take tumbles trying to jump over the railing. In the midst of the chaos, Nimmo rips off Mazzica's shirt, continuing the joyous celebration. Mazzica, who had a walk-off fielder's choice just a few days prior, reflects on his approach, saying "I was trying to hit it straight up in the air and I hit it straight into the ground for the second time in a row, but we got the job done." His honesty and the Mets' resilience have the fanbase buzzing, as the team continues their surprising run in the competitive National League East division.
