Licking the bat before every pitch and other softball stuff, a breakdown
What Happened
In a close regional softball tournament game, the George Mason batter steps up to the plate down by one run in the seventh inning. Before taking her practice swing, she does something out of the ordinary - she licks her bat. Commentator notes this is an "odd" superstition, wondering if it will "help her out." The pitcher then delivers the 1-0 pitch, and the batter swings and misses. Undeterred, she steps out of the box, looks at her bat again, and gives it another big "licky licky" before stepping back in. However, the next two pitches result in a strikeout, and the unusual bat-licking ritual does not pay off this time. Later in the regional tournament, an Auburn batter is hit by a pitch on the forearm. She is clearly upset, telling the umpire "it hit me in my forearm right there." The replay shows the ball striking her arm hard, causing it to visibly vibrate. The next time she comes to bat, it's a 2-0 count with the bases loaded in a one-run game. Rather than take the favorable hitting opportunity, she tells the pitcher "hit me again" - and that's exactly what happens, as she is plunked once more. However, this time she gets her revenge, crushing a grand slam over the fence to put Auburn ahead. The action continues, as a Duke batter facing elimination fouls off pitch after pitch in an 0-2 count, staving off the Charlotte comeback. She eventually drives a double to the wall, tying the game. The next Duke batter then singles to give them the lead. However, the game goes to review on a close play at the plate, and the umpires controversially rule the runner safe, much to the bewilderment of the announcers. Elsewhere, a Long Island outfielder makes an incredible bare-handed catch after the ball bounces off the top of her head and shoulder, drawing excited reactions. A similar play happens in the Louisville-Indiana game, where the shortstop knocks the ball out of the second baseman's glove, only to catch it herself bare-handed. The second baseman is not amused, feeling she should get credit for the original catch. Through these varied softball moments, the video showcases the game's unique superstitions, intense rivalries, and athletic feats that captivate fans and onlookers alike.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentover the weekend I let my screen
recorder run over some softball games
that are taking place it's the regional
tournaments and then I just went through
the footage and I just said let's see
what I can find so this isn't the best
it's not the greatest but it's what I
found from the few things I screen
recorded let's get into it like I saw
this batter step up with a black eye no
idea what happened no idea actually got
it she had one though and then I saw
this guy looking somewhere else after
the pitch and that made me giggle I saw
this batter come up for George Mason who
was down by one run to Duke in the
seventh inning and she took her practice
swing and I thought that's normal and
then she stepped in the box and she
licked her bat a big old tongue swipe
and I thought that's not normal that's a
little odd is that going to help her out
she's got a 1-0 count pitcher leans back
tosses
swinging a mess didn't help didn't help
but she liked the way it taste maybe
because she steps out she looks at her
bat again she goes let me get that same
spot
licky licky she likes the bat and it
gotta be a Superstition maybe a big Puig
fan and the next pitch ooh she takes
that's a strike strike two I'm guessing
she licked about again but they cut away
and strike three so it didn't work this
time but maybe it's worked in the past
and maybe it'll work again in the future
for the bat licker on George Mason I
kept going and I saw this game I saw
this Auburn batter get hit by the pitch
oh and she did not like it she walks
down the pitcher was like does it did
she swing does that count as a swing and
the batter turns and says no it hit me
in my forearm right there right there
that's where it hit me I didn't like it
and here's the replay and the ball comes
and just bam right on the forearm
vibrates her whole arm the next time she
comes to the plate she's got a 2-0 count
that's the count you want to swing in
she's got the bases loaded it's a one
run game she says hit me again never
mind I hit you this time over the fence
Grand Slam onto the plate celebrates
with her teammates and then she's gonna
tell them like I told her I don't like
that [ __ ] hit me again [ __ ] yeah
hit me again [ __ ] yeah remember you hit
me right here that's payback oh Duke was
losing to Charlotte now if Charlotte
loses they get eliminated if they win
they go to a elimination game both teams
they play again because it's double
elimination 0-2 and watch this batter
just foul that one back foul that one
back foul this one back Staying Alive O2
and then she takes that one she fouls it
back the next one she's gonna put in
play it gets all the way to the wall
splits the Gap and she's gonna slide
into second tying run on the base pass
yeah that's [ __ ] gone oh
and then the next batter also an O2
pitch that one's up the middle the pinch
Runner is going to come around Duke ties
it up they don't want to play another
game they just want to win this one next
batter first pitch slices it down the
line are they gonna send her no but the
go-ahead runs on third next batter right
back to the pitcher and they come home
and get that out but it goes to review
and I was thinking well I don't know is
there something I don't know about
softball because I mean clearly she's
out there the glove hits her before she
gets to the plate and then the rule is
basically the same as MLB you can't
block the plate without the ball but
once you have the ball you can block the
plate all you want and that looked
pretty clean to me but they say safe and
the fans are like what the ball beater
what are they talking about I guess this
is what they want the catcher to do when
she sets up they want her to not be
there but there so even though the
runner's way far away she has a land I
don't know I don't really like that call
at all in the Long Island Alabama game
this was kind of wild the left fielder
she runs out for this ball she's gonna
get her glove on it and then bounces up
it lands on her head then her shoulder
and she completes the catch bare-handed
she's all jazzed up about it because
she's like what are the odds of that so
the ball goes off her glove lands on top
of her head and then onto like her
shoulder and she's gonna grab it you
look at both frames at once it hits
doink her head keeps it alive and then
rolls onto her shoulder then she's like
I got it they went and reviewed it and
they're like yeah that's cool out great
catch
and then something similar happened in
the Louisville Indiana game this Ball's
popped up second baseman's like I got it
I got it I got it second baseman catches
it shortstop kind of knocks it out of
her glove and then she catches it bare
hand and second baseman is like what
because she's all excited like hey I
caught it look I caught in the second
base was like yeah I mean I caught it
and then you knocked it out of my glove
and then you caught it
so I don't know if you get credit for
doing well because look it's in my glove
and you knock it out and then you catch
it second baseman's not giving her extra
credit for that I just caught it you
didn't have to do any of that so those
are some of the things that I saw
