What Happened

Jack Flaherty, the 23-year-old right-handed pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, is on fire. Over his last nine starts, Flaherty has pitched 56.1 innings, allowing just 29 hits and posting a minuscule 0.80 ERA. In his latest outing, Flaherty goes 8 innings, giving up only 1 hit and 0 earned runs. Teammate Tommy Edman makes a fantastic play at third base, diving to his knees to rob the opposing hitter. Meanwhile, Max Fried, the 25-year-old left-hander for the Atlanta Braves, is also dominating on the mound. In his team's last nine games with Fried starting, the Braves are a perfect 9-0. In this particular game, Fried goes 7 strong innings, allowing just 1 hit and 0 earned runs. He mixes his mid-90s fastball with a devastating 75 mph curveball that leaves Nationals star Juan Soto flailing. Soto can't believe the movement on Fried's breaking ball as he angrily tosses his bat to the ground. Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson makes a few nice plays in the field to support Fried's gem. "There's another yaker," the announcer exclaims as Fried retires 19 batters in a row, the lone hit an infield dribbler. "Wow, that curveball is not legal, man," the announcer says in amazement as Fried continues to bamboozle hitters with his offspeed stuff. Soto, one of the game's best young hitters, goes down swinging against Fried's electricity. All three pitchers - Flaherty, Fried and Dodgers All-Star Julio Urias - happened to attend the same high school in California, giving their former teammates and coaches plenty to brag about. "Jack Flaherty, Max Fried, Julio Urias - all three of them went to the same high school in California," the announcer notes. "Urias might have the biggest bragging rights, though, after making the All-Star team." These two young aces, Flaherty and Fried, are absolutely dominating on the mound and putting their teams in position to make a deep playoff push. With their electric stuff and nasty breaking balls, they are quickly establishing themselves as two of the premier pitchers in Major League Baseball.
