What Happened

The bottom of the seventh inning of the Sunday Night Baseball matchup between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox is filled with a wild series of events. With the game tied 2-2, the Red Sox have a runner on second base with two outs. Boston's Christian Vázquez steps up to the plate against Yankees pitcher Chad Green. The at-bat features a controversial strike zone, as Green's pitches on the outside corner are called strikes by home plate umpire Joe West, frustrating Vázquez. After falling behind 0-2, Vázquez fouls off a pitch. In the next at-bat, Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner hits a pop-up that New York center fielder Aaron Hicks appears to have under control, but he drops the ball, extending the inning. Red Sox slugger Kyle Schwarber then hits another shallow fly ball that Yankees left fielder Joey Gallo also fails to catch, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The Yankees escape the inning without further damage, but the defensive miscues continue in the top of the eighth. With a runner on first, Wade's stolen base attempt is foiled when he stops running, thinking Yankees catcher Jose Trevino had swung and foul tipped the pitch. Trevino did not swing, and Wade is easily thrown out. In the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees mount a comeback. Anthony Rizzo doubles, and Aaron Judge comes to the plate with two runners on. On a 1-2 count, Judge fouls off a pitch that Yankees catcher Jose Trevino appears to drop, but the umpire rules it was caught. Judge then delivers a two-run double to give the Yankees the lead. Giancarlo Stanton follows with a towering home run to extend the Yankees' advantage. The game is filled with bizarre plays, unexpected defensive lapses, and plenty of emotion from the players and fans. "What the hell did I just watch?" exclaims one fan, summing up the surreal nature of this Sunday Night Baseball showdown between the longtime rivals.
