The Nationals rally in the 8th and win the Wild Card Game, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the eighth inning of the National League Wild Card Game, the Washington Nationals trail the Milwaukee Brewers by one run. Nationals outfielder Juan Soto steps up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Brewers pitcher Josh Hader struggles to find the strike zone, walking Soto to force in the tying run. Soto, the 20-year-old phenom, comes up next with the game on the line. He works the count to 1-1 before ripping a ground ball down the third base line. Rookie third baseman Adrián Bórtolo of the Brewers mishandles the ball, allowing all three runners to score and giving the Nationals a 4-3 lead. The Washington crowd erupts in celebration as Soto is tagged out trying to stretch his hit into a double. "Oh, buckle up!" exclaims the TBS announcer as the Nationals take the lead late. "The young stud, 20 years old, Soto comes up... and hits it to the other young dude, the rookie for the Brewers and he misses it. That's going to allow the go-ahead run to score. Everyone that was on base scores - holy shit, what a brutal missed play!" In the top of the ninth, Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun hits a deep flyball, but it's caught, ending Milwaukee's comeback bid. The Nationals hold on for the 4-3 victory, advancing to the National League Division Series. "The Nationals have rallied and they have won the Wild Card Game!" the announcer declares. "The Brewers got slapped - they don't know what hit them. From the lead, down to your last three outs." This dramatic comeback win for the Nationals caps off an exciting start to the MLB postseason. Soto, the young phenom, delivers in the clutch, while the Brewers are left to lament the late defensive miscue that ultimately decided the game. The Nationals now move on to face a tough challenge in the next round, their season still alive thanks to this thrilling Wild Card victory.
