The Dodgers and Padres play through an earthquake, a breakdown
What Happened
In a highly unusual scene, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres continue their game as an earthquake rumbles through the stadium. Quique Hernandez of the Dodgers steps into the batter's box in the middle of the at-bat, unaware of the shaking around him. The camera captures the dramatic movement, as the entire stadium visibly sways from the tremors. Hernandez pauses, looking around in confusion, trying to figure out what is happening. The Padres' pitcher, seemingly oblivious to the earthquake, delivers the next pitch. The catcher, however, recognizes the situation and yells "terremoto!" - the Spanish word for earthquake - alerting his teammate. Both players take a moment to process the unusual circumstances they find themselves in. In the stands, the crowd erupts in panic and fear, with one outfielder describing his concern that it could be an "active shooter" situation. Fans cling to their seats as the earthquake continues to rock the stadium. High above the field, a fan can be seen gripping the railing, her expression one of shock and awe at the unfolding events. Despite the chaotic environment, the players attempt to refocus and continue the game. Hernandez fouls off several pitches as the earthquake persists, his attention divided between the at-bat and the trembling ground beneath his feet. The Padres' catcher, Semi, appears equally distracted, trying to maintain his composure and keep his eye on the ball. After several tense moments, Hernandez puts the ball in play and the outfielder makes the catch. The Padres' pitcher, having completed the at-bat without any knowledge of the earthquake, heads to the dugout, only to be informed of the extraordinary circumstances he has just navigated. This surreal scene unfolding on the diamond underscores the unpredictable nature of sports and the resilience of the players. Despite the unsettling external factors, they manage to push forward, demonstrating their dedication to the game and their ability to adapt to the most unexpected of circumstances.
