What Happened

In a heated matchup between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers, tensions boil over as the benches clear following a controversial play at the plate. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with the Dodgers leading by one run, Diamondbacks catcher Carson Kelly steps up to the plate. As Kelly swings, the ball hits off the knob of his bat and pops up in the air. Dodgers pitcher Brusdar Graterol immediately throws his hands up, believing Kelly was hit by the pitch. Umpire Bill Miller reviews the play, but after careful examination, he determines that the ball did not hit Kelly and the original call stands. Kelly strongly disagrees, insisting the ball struck his hand. "I had it off the knob," Kelly says. "I'll take a look at it, we'll go take a look because I'm a good umpire." Despite Kelly's protests, the umpires stick with the original safe call, much to the Diamondbacks' frustration. As Kelly slowly walks towards the Dodgers dugout, Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly begins yelling at the Dodgers, irritated by the delay caused by the replay review. "Go, he's out, let's go," Kelly shouts. Dodgers catcher Will Smith then strikes out to end the game and as he walks off the field, Diamondbacks reliever Caleb Smith begins chirping at the Dodgers dugout. "Always talking, always running your mouth," Smith yells, laughing. The confrontation continues to escalate, with Dodgers players Clayton Kershaw, Max Muncy and Austin Barnes all jumping into the fray. Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray, who is not in uniform, also makes his way onto the field, leading Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to initially mistake him for a staff member. "What the fuck are you doing, get over there," Roberts shouts, before realizing Ray is an active player. The two teams continue to exchange words, with Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta giving Roberts a stiff-arm as the managers try to separate the players. Despite the heated exchange, the Diamondbacks ultimately fall to the Dodgers, 4-3, in a tightly contested divisional matchup that showcases the intensity and rivalry between these two NL West contenders.
