What Happened

In the top of the 3rd inning, the Milwaukee Brewers trail the opposing team by 2 runs. First baseman Mark Reynolds steps up to the plate with one out and runners on second and third. He hits a double, scoring a run and putting runners on second and third. The Brewers then intentionally walk the next batter, Jean Segura, to load the bases with two outs. The next Brewers batter, Aramis Ramirez, steps in with the chance to get his team out of the inning. The count goes to 1-2 and the pitcher delivers a wild pitch that appears to hit the home plate umpire. The catcher, unable to corral the ball, tries to retrieve it but ends up making an errant throw, allowing two more runs to score. Segura, seeing the catcher's distraction, takes off for home and slides in safely, giving the Brewers a 3-run lead on the wild pitch and throwing error. The Brewers' dugout erupts in celebration, with players hopping, skipping and jumping around. The catcher is visibly distraught, realizing his mistake has cost his team 3 crucial runs. However, the Brewers' rally is not over, as the very next pitch results in a strikeout to end the inning, stranding 3 runners. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke comments, "That's a tough one for the catcher, I know he feels awful about that. But we'll take the runs any way we can get them." Catcher Jonathan Lucroy says, "I just tried to make a play and it got away from me. That's on me, I have to be better there." Four years later, the Brewers find themselves in a similar situation, again scoring 3 runs on a wild pitch in a crucial game. Roenicke remarks, "I guess we've got a knack for that kind of thing. We'll take the runs however we can get them." The wild pitch and throwing error prove to be the difference, as the Brewers hold on to win the game by a final score of 5-3. It's a tough break for the opposing team, but the Brewers gladly capitalize on the miscues to secure a hard-fought victory.
