Ohtani throws near Canha's head and he doesn't enjoy it, a breakdown
What Happened
Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels takes the mound in the bottom of the third inning against Mark Canha of the Oakland Athletics. With a runner on first and no outs, Ohtani throws a high, inside fastball that narrowly misses Canha's head. Canha reacts angrily, yelling "Come on, show! Let's fucking go! Get that shit out of here! Stop it! It's too close, it scared me. I don't like it." Los Angeles Angels catcher Max Stassi rushes to Ohtani's defense, jawing at Canha and telling him to stop "showing up" his pitcher. Canha fires back, saying "I'm allowed to react, I'm allowed to be a little scared because of that." The umpire intervenes, trying to calm the situation. Ohtani apologizes to Canha, acknowledging it was his mistake. The at-bat continues, with Ohtani throwing a splitter that Canha fouls off. Ohtani then ties him up with a fastball, as Stassi guns down the runner at first for an inning-ending double play. Ohtani applauds sarcastically, seemingly frustrated with the entire sequence of events. In the top of the sixth inning, Ohtani hits Canha with a breaking ball, but this time Canha calmly takes his base, as the earlier tensions have been diffused. Ohtani explains to the umpire that he did not intentionally hit Canha, and the game continues without further incident. The rivalry between the Angels and Athletics adds extra context to this tense exchange on the mound. Ohtani, the reigning American League MVP, is the clear star of the Angels, while Canha is a key contributor for the Athletics. This matchup between two talented players from division rivals heightens the drama of the moment. Despite the heated words and near-miss, both Ohtani and Canha ultimately demonstrate professionalism in navigating the situation. Ohtani apologizes for the errant pitch, while Canha accepts the hit-by-pitch without further retaliation. The umpire's intervention and the players' ability to move past the initial confrontation allow the game to continue in a sportsmanlike manner.
