Joe Kelly with a bad inning to give the Angels the lead, a breakdown
What Happened
Joe Kelly, the relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is struggling in the bottom of the 8th inning against the Los Angeles Angels. The game is tied at 3-3 and Kelly is unable to find his control, walking the first batter he faces on four pitches. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts looks concerned on the bench, muttering "oh shit, this ain't going to be good." Kelly settles down momentarily, striking out the next batter. But he then falls behind 2-0 to the following hitter, prompting Roberts to intentionally walk him to load the bases with one out. Kelly appears rattled, throwing a wild pitch that allows the go-ahead run to reach base. The pitching coach comes out to the mound, urging Kelly to simply "throw your best pitch" - his 98 mph fastball. Corey Seager, the Angels' next hitter, steps to the plate with the bases loaded. Kelly rears back and fires three straight fastballs at 97-98 mph, getting Seager to ground weakly to the pitcher. But the play at the plate is close and Dodgers catcher Russell Martin is unable to make the tag, with the runner being called safe. Roberts and Martin argue the call to no avail. With the bases still loaded, the next Angels hitter smacks a two-run single, extending their lead to 5-3. Kelly is unable to record the final out of the inning, as the Dodgers suffer a tough defeat. As the players exit the field, a dejected Roberts and Martin commiserate, knowing this was a painful loss for their team. The Dodgers, who were hoping to gain ground in the NL West race, now find themselves on the wrong side of a five-to-three final score, with Kelly's unraveling in the 8th inning proving to be the difference. It's a tough night for the home team, as their crosstown rivals the Angels take the victory in this edition of the Freeway Series.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentThis was requested. Joe Kelly has a little meltdown versus the Angels. Tied at three,
bottom eight. Two teams claiming to be from Los Angeles. Only one team from Los
Angeles. Opens them up. Change up, then slider, then a little curve, I think. Then
the fastball, but it's a four -pitch walk. Dave Roberts says, oh shit, this ain't
going to be good. But he does get the next guy there. A little slide
piece, a little change up, fastball. Nice pitching from Joe Kelly there. Not throwing the
fastball early in counts. There's a little slider, a little change up. Oh, 2 -0.
There's a pickoff. And now Atani is at second and first base is going to
be open. So Dave Roberts says, yeah, let's just walk that guy. He's got a
2 -0 count anyway. Next up, off speed in the dirt. Now first base is
still open, but you're not going to intentionally walk the base loaded. Just calm down,
dude. Jesus, calm down. Change up. Nice pitch. There's the fastball. The first fastball
he tries to throw in a wild. Wild. Next pitch. That'll look kind of good.
Change up, but he doesn't get the call. So it's a walk. Bases are loaded
anyway. Pitching coach comes out and says, hey, Joe Kelly, do you throw a 98
mile per hour fastball? Yeah, I do, coach. Well, why don't you just fucking throw
that? Corey Seager gets a little, some neck stretches in. Here we go. And here
we go. Yeah. Fastball, 97. Fastball, 97. Fastball, 98. It's kind of
like just throw your best pitch, you know, then gets them to try and chase.
He doesn't then gets them to try and chase. He does. He does puts it
in play weekly months. He comes home for the out. It's a force, but he's
safe. Martin's like, what? How? Here's the replay. Real close and weird.
Martin's looking. He's like, ah, I don't know. Uh, they called him
safe. So like you have to overturn that. I wish they had a camera angle
behind. Neither broadcast had one kind of crazy. Call him safe. Dave Roberts says, fuck.
Martin says, just me and you, dude. Let's get these next two guys. There's a
fastball. Nice. Uh -oh. Yanks won. Another run's going to score. Zero fun day for
Russell Martin. Then he gets his guys. Fastball. There you go.
Nice. Change up. Strike three. But that lost them the game. Dodgers
lost five to three. Angels won. End of meltdown video.
