What Happened

Joe Kelly, the relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is struggling in the bottom of the 8th inning against the Los Angeles Angels. The game is tied at 3-3 and Kelly is unable to find his control, walking the first batter he faces on four pitches. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts looks concerned on the bench, muttering "oh shit, this ain't going to be good." Kelly settles down momentarily, striking out the next batter. But he then falls behind 2-0 to the following hitter, prompting Roberts to intentionally walk him to load the bases with one out. Kelly appears rattled, throwing a wild pitch that allows the go-ahead run to reach base. The pitching coach comes out to the mound, urging Kelly to simply "throw your best pitch" - his 98 mph fastball. Corey Seager, the Angels' next hitter, steps to the plate with the bases loaded. Kelly rears back and fires three straight fastballs at 97-98 mph, getting Seager to ground weakly to the pitcher. But the play at the plate is close and Dodgers catcher Russell Martin is unable to make the tag, with the runner being called safe. Roberts and Martin argue the call to no avail. With the bases still loaded, the next Angels hitter smacks a two-run single, extending their lead to 5-3. Kelly is unable to record the final out of the inning, as the Dodgers suffer a tough defeat. As the players exit the field, a dejected Roberts and Martin commiserate, knowing this was a painful loss for their team. The Dodgers, who were hoping to gain ground in the NL West race, now find themselves on the wrong side of a five-to-three final score, with Kelly's unraveling in the 8th inning proving to be the difference. It's a tough night for the home team, as their crosstown rivals the Angels take the victory in this edition of the Freeway Series.
